Mack Hollins Voices Frustration with Patriots, Questions Team Culture
Wide receiver Mack Hollins, a recent addition to the New England Patriots, has already made headlines—but not for the reasons fans were hoping. Just months after signing a one-year deal with the team, Hollins has publicly criticized the franchise’s culture, sparking controversy and casting a shadow over the Patriots’ offseason program.
In a candid media session following the team’s organized team activities (OTAs), Hollins didn’t mince words when asked how he was adjusting to his new environment.
“My biggest regret is leaving Buffalo,” Hollins told reporters. “There’s no real accountability here. No discipline. Guys show up late or miss practice because the sun’s out, and no one says a word. That kind of stuff never flew with the Bills. We held each other to a higher standard.”
Hollins, 31, joined New England in the 2025 offseason on a one-year, $2.8 million contract after a respectable stint with the Buffalo Bills. In the 2024 season, he logged 12 receptions for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also playing a crucial role on special teams. Though not a star, his effort and energy made him a respected locker room presence in Buffalo—and a favorite among fans.
His comments immediately went viral on X (formerly Twitter), with fans from both teams chiming in. Bills supporters were quick to applaud his honesty, posting messages like “Mack Hollins telling it like it is. That’s why we loved him in Buffalo” and “This is why culture matters. #BillsMafia.” Patriots fans, however, were less forgiving.
One Patriots fan replied, “Already throwing shade? You’ve been here two minutes. Maybe focus on earning your spot.” Others defended the team, blaming the outburst on frustration over limited reps or a poor OTA showing.
It’s no secret that the Patriots have struggled to find an identity in the post-Belichick era. Under new head coach Mike Vrabel, the team is trying to rebuild after a disastrous 4-13 campaign in 2024. Vrabel’s old-school, tough-love approach hasn’t yet translated to wins—or unity. The team’s passing offense ranked 28th in the league last season, averaging just 176.2 yards per game, according to NFL.com.
Hollins’ remarks, while striking, may point to deeper locker room fractures. With stars like Stefon Diggs added to the receiving corps and Kendrick Bourne returning from injury, chemistry is more important than ever. Yet insiders suggest the team still lacks cohesion, and Hollins’ frustration may reflect broader concerns within the roster.
A 6-foot-4, 221-pound wideout with eight seasons under his belt, Hollins has seen his share of locker rooms since entering the league as a fourth-round pick by the Eagles in 2017. He’s also spent time with the Dolphins, Raiders, and Falcons before landing in Buffalo, where he appeared to finally find the right fit.
“Buffalo was different,” Hollins said during his presser. “Everyone bought in. You didn’t have to second-guess if the guy next to you was giving 100%.”
His critique appears to be aimed squarely at the Patriots’ current state, which some analysts describe as “rudderless.” Even Vrabel, while measured in his response, acknowledged the work ahead. “We’re focused on building something that lasts,” Vrabel said. “And that means holding everyone—players and coaches alike—accountable.”
The front office may not look kindly on Hollins’ candor, especially given his contract structure. His $2.8 million deal comes with no guaranteed money, meaning the team can part ways without financial penalty if they feel his presence is doing more harm than good. With $12.3 million in cap space remaining, per Spotrac, the Patriots have some flexibility to make moves if necessary.
Adding to the tension is the recent incident involving Stefon Diggs, who raised eyebrows with a viral video of him partying on a yacht while skipping voluntary workouts. Though the Patriots downplayed the situation, it’s clear the organization is walking a fine line when it comes to managing egos and establishing leadership.
As OTAs roll on and training camp approaches, questions swirl about Hollins’ future in Foxborough. Can he adapt to a team still finding its identity, or will his time with the Patriots be short-lived?
NFL insiders say it’s a situation to watch closely. “Hollins is the kind of guy who speaks his mind, and sometimes that rubs teams the wrong way,” said one AFC executive. “But he also holds people accountable and works hard. It’s a matter of whether the Patriots are willing to listen—or move on.”
Meanwhile, in Buffalo, Hollins’ former teammates and fans have taken his comments as a badge of honor. “He didn’t have to say it,” one fan tweeted. “But he did. Because he knows what winning culture looks like—and it’s not in New England right now.”
Only time will tell whether Hollins’ remarks serve as a wake-up call for a floundering franchise or the beginning of a swift exit. For now, the veteran wideout remains a Patriot—but his words have ensured that all eyes will be on Foxborough this summer.
