Dismembered Truth: The Twisted Mystery of Ryan Zimmerman’s Disappearance
In January 2016, a chilling discovery shook Mercer County, Ohio. A woman out walking her dog stumbled upon what looked like human bones hidden among the frozen brush. When investigators arrived, their worst suspicions were confirmed — the skeletal remains included a human spine, and the victim had been dismembered. What followed was a years-long journey into one of the most disturbing and bizarre cases of modern Ohio criminal history — the disappearance and murder of 21-year-old Ryan Zimmerman.
A Gruesome Beginning
The initial scene yielded few clues. The spine was all that could be found. No skull, no arms, no legs — nothing else. The case remained cold for four years, the unidentified bones uploaded to the national NamUs missing persons database. But without a name, no narrative could emerge — only a mystery cloaked in frost and silence.
That silence was broken in 2020, when an agent from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation cross-referenced the 2016 skeletal remains with the profile of a young man missing from Columbus, Ohio. Ryan Zimmerman had been reported missing in November 2015, though he hadn’t been seen since September. The DNA was a match.
A Family’s Worst Nightmare
Warren Zimmerman, Ryan’s father, received a call no parent should ever have to answer. The remains were his son’s. But worse still were the details that followed. The body had been dismembered. Saw marks were found on the bones, suggesting a calculated, grisly effort to dispose of the young man. Even more horrifying — major body parts were still missing, including Ryan’s skull.
Warren, in shock, asked the question that would soon consume investigators: “Who would do something like that?”
The Last Known Contacts
Detectives soon identified three people who had been living with Ryan in Columbus before his disappearance: Corey Buzzard, Sarah Buzzard, and Jen Whitaker. By 2021, Sarah and Jen — now married — were living together at Sarah’s mother’s house in Indiana. On August 25 of that year, authorities executed an arrest warrant and search at the residence, with Sarah the first to be detained.
At first, officers told her the warrant was for a theft charge in Ohio — a ruse to avoid tipping their hand. But when detectives from the Ohio Attorney General’s office arrived at the jail to interview her, they quickly turned the conversation toward the real reason they’d traveled hundreds of miles: the murder of Ryan Zimmerman.
“Emma”: A Name, a Complication
According to Sarah, Ryan was known to them as “Emma” — a name allegedly used while Ryan was transitioning. However, this claim has not been corroborated by Ryan’s family or known contacts. Whether this was part of Ryan’s identity or a manipulation by those around him remains unclear. What is certain is that Ryan, while living in Columbus, was socially isolated and financially dependent on his roommates.
Sarah explained that Ryan had met her husband Corey online and was invited to move in, something she had initially objected to. Corey, Sarah claimed, had sexual interests that factored into Ryan’s move. Ryan agreed to get a job and contribute to rent — a condition he reportedly failed to meet. As a result, Corey asked him to leave, and Ryan supposedly packed up and left in late September 2015.
The Vanishing Point
Sarah said she saw Ryan get into a car and drive away. But she also admitted that Ryan left his own car behind, which struck both her and investigators as odd. Even more suspect was her later confession: that she had taken Ryan’s car to a gas station after his disappearance and had to tow it back after it stalled. She said she didn’t have permission to drive it and was embarrassed. Jen, her partner, was reportedly with her.
This was a key revelation — Ryan’s car had been found abandoned weeks after he was reported missing, with the license plate missing and some of his personal belongings still inside. At the time, it was a major red flag for Warren Zimmerman. Now, investigators knew someone had moved the car after Ryan disappeared — someone who had lied about it for six years.
Interrogations and Discrepancies
As the separate interrogations of Sarah and Jen unfolded, it became clear that their stories did not align. Sarah portrayed herself as passive and confused, often repeating that she “couldn’t remember” if she had been home when Ryan left. Jen echoed similar ambiguity, but with increasing contradiction — especially regarding the use of Ryan’s vehicle and whether they had seen him leave.
Both claimed Ryan had merely vanished — no violence, no struggle, no confrontation. But detectives, armed with forensic evidence and years of cold-case expertise, were far from convinced.
Sarah and Jen’s demeanor raised additional suspicion. Sarah appeared anxious and disoriented during her arrest, almost as though she had been expecting it. Her behavior during questioning — pale, distant, and visibly shaken — hinted at something darker beneath the surface. Jen, on the other hand, remained defensive and evasive, particularly when asked about the night Ryan vanished.
A Confession and a Second Body
The pressure continued to mount. While the full details of what finally broke the case have not been made public, what is known is this: A chilling confession eventually emerged, leading investigators to the discovery of another body. Whether this body was connected to Ryan’s murder — or indicated another, unrelated crime — has yet to be fully disclosed. But it added another layer of darkness to an already macabre case.
Even with confessions, investigators found themselves tangled in a web of manipulation, incomplete truths, and psychological complexity. Why was Ryan killed? Was it premeditated, a moment of rage, or something else entirely? And who, exactly, was responsible — Corey, Sarah, Jen, or some combination of the three?
Seeking Justice
To this day, parts of Ryan Zimmerman’s body remain missing. His family has yet to receive the full closure that any family deserves. And although arrests have been made and confessions secured, the true motive behind his murder remains elusive.
What began with a dog walker’s discovery in the woods spiraled into a years-long saga of deceit, identity, and cold-blooded murder. It is a case that haunts investigators, devastates a family, and reminds us all of how easily a person can disappear — and how long justice can take to arrive.
