Trump administration fires federal prosecutors who worked on Capitol riot investigations

(TNND) — Attorney General Pam Bondi went after federal prosecutors who worked on cases against January 6 rioters on Friday, firing them saying they were “removed from federal service effective immediately.”
In a copy of one of the dismissal letters obtained by NBC News, Bondi did not specify why the prosecutors were let go.
These firings are the first of career prosecutors who investigated the Capitol riots four years ago, but it is likely not the end of the Trump administration’s retribution plan.
After his inauguration, President Donald Trump fired several probationary federal prosecutors who were either recently hired or in new positions yet had worked the January 6 cases.Trump also pardoned supporters who were arrested during the riots, sparking backlash from critics as some who were convicted of assaulting police officers were included.
Probationary prosecutors who assisted special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into whether Trump attempted to unlawfully overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election were also fired.Friday’s firings reportedly came at a tense time for the Justice Department as Trump’s handling of the January 6 case sparked outrage among career federal employees.
DOJ insiders told NBC News that the targeting of prosecutors who have investigated the president has upended the department.
Law enforcement officials have called the firings “horrifying” as others have said it would make many of them hesitant to engage in future investigations into the White House.
Bondi’s firings came on the same day that the Trump administration celebrated the Supreme Court ruling deciding that individual judges lack the power to issue nationwide injunctions – a historic ruling against birthright citizenship.
The ruling was seen as a victory for the White House, as it allows Trump’s executive order to halt birthright citizenship for undocumented immigrants to take effect.
