The Murder Plot That Wasn’t: The Chilling Case of Dalia Dippolito
In the annals of true crime, few cases have garnered as much public attention—and disbelief—as the attempted murder-for-hire involving Dalia Dippolito. What began as a tearful police encounter outside a Florida home quickly unraveled into one of the most elaborate and bizarre sting operations ever broadcast to the public.
Let’s rewind to the morning when this twisted drama first came to light.
A Shocking Scene… at First Glance
At 0:00 on the police bodycam footage, a sobbing Dalia Dippolito is seen being informed by Sergeant Frank Ramsey that her husband, Michael Dippolito, had been killed in a shooting at their home.
“Is your husband Michael okay?” the officer asks, before delivering the blow: “I’m sorry to tell you ma’am, he’s been killed.”
Dalia collapses in a storm of what appears to be inconsolable grief. But what neither she nor the viewing public knew at that moment was that this was no ordinary homicide investigation—it was a well-orchestrated sting by the Boynton Beach Police Department, aimed at preventing a very real murder from taking place.
A Relationship Built on Sand
Dalia met Michael Dippolito in 2008. She was a real estate agent who also had a side hustle as an escort. Michael, a man with a criminal past involving fraud, had managed to bounce back financially and appeared to be living a relatively stable life.
Their romance was fast and intense. They were married just a few months after meeting. But according to Michael, the red flags started showing almost immediately after the honeymoon period ended.
“Money started disappearing. She was supposed to wire me $90,000… the money never showed up,” Michael later explained to investigators.
Michael claimed he had given Dalia over $240,000 throughout their relationship, often for vague financial arrangements that never panned out. Soon, it became clear: their whirlwind romance was based on lies and manipulation. But what he didn’t expect was that it would escalate into attempted murder.
The First Break in the Case
An ex-boyfriend of Dalia’s, Mohammed Shihadeh, came forward with explosive information. Dalia had allegedly asked him if he could help her find a hitman to kill Michael.
“She’s dead serious,” Mohammed told detectives.
Realizing they couldn’t pursue charges based on hearsay alone, the Boynton Beach Police Department deputized Mohammed as a confidential informant. He arranged to meet with Dalia at a gas station—this time wired with a hidden camera and microphone.
During the meeting, Dalia agreed to pay $1,200 for the purchase of a gun and handed over photos of Michael. This exchange gave investigators exactly what they needed: video evidence of her intent.
Enter the “Hitman”
Two days later, Dalia met with a man she believed to be the assassin—who was actually undercover officer “Witty G.” Their conversation was chillingly casual and detailed.
“He gets two in the head, that’s it,” she said, outlining the plan to stage the murder as a robbery gone wrong.
In the span of a 23-minute conversation, Dalia not only discussed timing and logistics—right down to when Michael would walk the dog—but also agreed to pay $7,000 for the killing. She assured the officer that she could get the money, even boasting about her resilience:
“I’m a lot tougher than what I look. I know you’re like, ‘Oh, what a cute little girl,’ or whatever.”
The plan was simple: Michael would be home alone Wednesday morning. The hitman would enter while Dalia was at the gym, shoot him, stage the scene, and vanish.
The Reveal
Rather than let the attempted murder play out, the police staged a fake crime scene. Yellow tape surrounded the Dippolito home. Squad cars filled the driveway. Michael, very much alive, was hidden away at the station.
When Dalia arrived, she was met by Sergeant Ramsey—cameras rolling.
“Your husband’s been killed,” Ramsey told her. Her tearful performance began immediately.
But shortly after, she was taken to the station and told the truth. Michael walked into the room alive. Her demeanor instantly changed.
“You’re kidding me, right?” she said with a blank expression.
There was no emotion. No outrage. Just cold disbelief that her plan had failed.
Michael’s Perspective
To proceed with the case, detectives needed to understand not just what happened, but why.
Michael told police how his life had spiraled out of control since meeting Dalia. Suspicious phone calls, planted drugs, and disappearing money were all part of a pattern that seemed designed to ruin him.
“I haven’t had this many incidents go wrong in my life since I’ve been with her,” Michael said. “I haven’t had police contact in years. And now I’ve seen them ten times since I married her.”
He even described an incident where drugs were found hidden in his gas cap—a strange attempt to possibly frame him while he was still on probation. Had they been discovered earlier, he could’ve returned to prison.
The growing financial losses, his shaky legal standing, and the planted evidence all seemed to converge on one motive: money. If he died, Dalia would retain control of his assets. A clean break.
The Legal Battle
Dalia was arrested and charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder. Her 2011 trial was a media sensation. The defense claimed the whole thing was a setup and that the police had entrapped her.
Despite the recorded meetings, her lawyers maintained that Dalia never truly intended to go through with the murder—that it was all an elaborate play for attention or to scare Michael.
The jury didn’t buy it. She was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
However, that conviction was later overturned due to issues with jury selection. In a 2017 retrial, a new jury once again found her guilty. This time, she received a 16-year prison sentence, which she is currently serving.
A Lesson in Deception
The Dalia Dippolito case serves as a stark reminder of how manipulation, greed, and a lack of conscience can combine into something truly dangerous. Were it not for a watchful ex-boyfriend and a carefully orchestrated police sting, Michael Dippolito might not have lived to tell his side of the story.
From tearful widow to convicted felon, Dalia’s performance was convincing—until the cameras turned off and the truth was laid bare.
In the end, justice wasn’t just served—it was filmed.
