In the brightly lit auditorium, thousands of hearts joined together, singing the sacred song of the country. “¡Oh gloria inmarcesible!” – the national anthem of Colombia resounded, each note of music passing through tearful eyes, clasped hands. In the midst of the magnificent scene, André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra turned Bogotá into a sea of exploding emotions. Phones were raised high, tears fell silently, hearts throbbed to each majestic melody. A night of music was not just about music – but about national pride burning among the stars!
Colombia’s national anthem, known as Himno Nacional de la República de Colombia (The National Anthem of the Republic of Colombia), carries a deep historical significance tied to the country’s fight for independence.
When was Colombia’s national anthem created?
The lyrics were written in 1850 by Rafael Núñez, who would later become president of Colombia.
Originally called Himno Patriótico (Patriotic Hymn), Núñez’s composition began as a poem honoring Cartagena’s liberation from Spanish rule on 11 November 1811.
First published in the newspaper La Democracia in 1850, the poem marked the anniversary of this historic event while Núñez was serving as secretary of government for the Province of Cartagena.
