Since stepping into the role of Wheel of Fortune host in September, Ryan Seacrest has received a mixed response from fans.
While some viewers have praised his energy and enthusiasm, others have voiced their frustrations,
pointing out areas where they feel he falls short compared to longtime host Pat Sajak.
Fans Criticize Seacrest’s Hosting Style
On a recent Reddit discussion, Wheel of Fortune fans shared their thoughts on Seacrest’s performance, with many noting specific habits that have frustrated them.
One common complaint is that he fails to properly guide contestants through the rules of the game.
A Reddit user pointed out that Seacrest has repeatedly forgotten to remind players to discard the Wild Card after landing on Bankrupt. “I’m not sure if he’s been forgetting too much or he’s just being lazy to remind the player,” they wrote. Another fan agreed, adding that Seacrest often neglects to remind contestants to call a letter before solving in the final round, which has cost players valuable winnings.
Others have taken issue with his handling of the Bonus Round. One fan criticized the way he reveals the prize amount, saying, “He holds the card up against his chest and builds up the suspense, and it’s 40K. Sad slide whistle.” Another viewer added, “I’ve said before he sort of contorts his body flipping open the card…as if it’s 75K or 100K, and it ends up being the lowest cash prize. It’s strange. He needs to practice just flipping it open without the clumsy body movements.”
Some have also accused Seacrest of using the show to promote his other projects. A viewer wrote, “I find Ryan to be very self-promoting about his other gigs and sponsorship deals on the show.” They also questioned the authenticity of his on-screen friendship with Vanna White, saying, “You can’t convince me that they’re actually buddies even though he keeps commenting on it and calling her a nickname. She’s a pro and plays along.”
Despite the criticism, Seacrest has plenty of supporters who believe he is doing a great job as host. Some viewers have noted that he brings a fresh energy to the show and interacts with contestants in a more engaging way than Sajak did.
One fan defended Seacrest, stating, “Get off of Ryan’s back. He is a delightful host. He makes Pat Sajak look like an ogre. He and Vanna are a perfect duo for Wheel. I enjoy the show now more than ever.”
Another viewer shared a similar sentiment, saying, “I really enjoy how Ryan hosts the show. He’s enthusiastic and really cheers the contestants on. I never cared for Pat’s snarky comments.”
A third person acknowledged that while Seacrest isn’t perfect, he does bring a positive energy to the show. “I do like how he is more engaging, but he has shortcomings sometimes. Pat was…demeaning.”
Regardless of the divided fan opinions, Seacrest’s addition to Wheel of Fortune has been beneficial for the show’s ratings.
During his first month as host, Wheel of Fortune averaged 7.99 million viewers, making it the most-watched entertainment series across broadcast, cable, and syndication, according to Nielsen data reported by Newsweek.
By the end of 2024, the show had seen only a slight decline in audience numbers. The Los Angeles Times reported that Wheel of Fortune was still drawing an average of 7.9 million viewers as of December 1, 2024, marking a 3% increase from the previous year.
A New Era for Wheel of Fortune
Seacrest had big shoes to fill following Sajak’s 40-plus years as host, and it’s clear that fans are still adjusting to the transition. While some viewers feel he has room for improvement, others appreciate his engaging approach to hosting.
Love him or hate him, Seacrest’s presence on Wheel of Fortune is proving to be a success in terms of ratings. As he continues to settle into his role, time will tell whether fans warm up to his style or continue to long for the days of Pat Sajak.
