10 Star Wars Characters Who Deserve a Gritty Prequel Series After Andor
Andor has finally concluded an acclaimed two-season run. The Star Wars Disney+ series brilliantly expands on Cassian Andor’s backstory, following Diego Luna’s character as he joins the Rebellion, becomes one of its top agents, and finally uncovers the truth about the Death Star. By the end of the series, Andor’s adventures play directly into his appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, completing his arc once and for all.
After Andor‘s amazing critical reception, Star Wars has a clear path forward for future Disney+ series. The franchise needs to embrace the gritty realism of the Tony Gilroy-created series for more characters, telling their stories with the same authenticity as Andor. From Sith Lords to iconic clones, each of these Star Wars characters needs their own grounded prequel series after Andor.

10The Story of General Grievous Has Yet to Be Fully Told
The Separatists’ Most Ruthless Villain Deserves Better
Image via Lucasfilm
Star Wars has only ever briefly touched on General Grievous’s horrifying origin story. The haunting cyborg leader of the Separatists’ droid army, whom audiences meet in Revenge of the Sith, was once a respected warrior on his home planet of Kalee. Then known as Qymaen jal Sheelal, the warlord was highly respected among the Kaleesh people but was obsessed with growing stronger and more deadly. When the Republic intervened in his wars, Qymaen developed a personal hatred for the galactic government, particularly the Jedi who enforced its rule.
A prequel series following a young Grievous could chart his early conquests as Qymaen jal Sheelal, as well as his eventual recruitment by Count Dooku and cybernetic enhancements. A limited series that doesn’t shy away from the violence of Grievous’s character would be a perfect successor to the grounded realism of Andor while giving screen time to one of the most interesting but woefully underdeveloped characters from the Prequel Trilogy. Much like Andor made watching Rogue One and A New Hope feel completely different, a Grievous prequel would completely change the perspective of The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith.
9Grand Moff Tarkin’s Rise to Power Changed the Galaxy
The Empire’s Most Ruthless Agent Deserves His Own Series
Image via LucasfilmWilhuff Tarkin is one of the most iconic Star Wars villains, even though he’s only made a handful of appearances throughout the entire franchise. A Grand Moff in the Imperial Navy, Tarkin is one of Emperor Palpatine’s most trusted advisors. Before his death aboard the first Death Star during the Battle of Yavin, Tarkin was one of the most feared men in the galaxy.
Audiences have gotten little hints about Tarkin’s ferocity in recent Star Wars projects, including in Andor, which revealed that he landed his ship on a crowd of Ghor people when they refused to clear a path. Someone as cold, calculating, and vengeful as Tarkin deserves to be explored in greater depth, even if what viewers learn of his backstory disgusts them. While books and comics have fleshed out parts of his backstory, there is still much more about Grand Moff Tarkin that Star Wars fans don’t yet know.
8Darth Sidious’s Backstory Is Bloody and Brutal
Star Wars Fans Want a Real Sith-Centered Story
Image via LucasfilmFor years, Star Wars fans have yearned to see a project centered entirely around the Sith. While The Acolyte attempted to delve deeper into this world, the show never quite won over fans. In the wake of the Disney+ series’ wonky reception, Star Wars needs to focus on a more prominent Sith to lead a prequel project. The most likely option would be Darth Sidious, whose younger years are of great interest to the Star Wars franchise.

While The Acolyte tried and failed to tell the story of Darth Plagueis, a Darth Sidious-centered prequel series could pick up this dropped storyline by depicting the legendary relationship between the master and apprentice. A gritty and darkly themed Sith series is exactly what Star Wars needs after proving it can tell mature stories like Andor. Furthermore, a Sidious series could help make the Sith Lord’s plans clearer, elevating his eventual success in routing out the Jedi during the events of Revenge of the Sith.
7Mace Windu Deserves a Chance to Shine
Samuel L. Jackson Is Itching to Reprise His Iconic Jedi Master Role
Image Via LucasfilmEver since his death in Revenge of the Sith, audiences have wanted to see more of Jedi Master Mace Windu. Even Samuel L. Jackson, who portrayed the character in the Prequel Trilogy, insists Mace Windu isn’t dead and could still be out there in the galaxy. While it might be too much to claim that Windu is alive after Order 66, there is still a way to explore more of the Jedi’s story.
Outside of a handful of comics, audiences have seen very little of Mace Windu’s life before The Phantom Menace. A prequel series could follow a younger Windu as he grows to be a powerful Force wielder at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The spinoff could even delve into Mace Windu’s unique connection to the Force, channeling both Dark and Light as part of the Vaapad path. Depending on which stage of his life Windu is in during the events of the series, Jackson could even reprise his iconic role, given that the actor still looks remarkably young for his age.
6Jango Fett’s Exploits Before Attack of the Clones Deserve Exploration
Star Wars’ Most Influential Bounty Hunter Needs More Screen Time
Property of Lucasfilm and Disney
It’s surprising that a character as influential to the story of the Skywalker Saga as Jango Fett should appear so rarely therein. The bounty hunter who served as the template for every clone trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic only appears in live-action once: during the events of Attack of the Clones. After his death during the Battle of Geonosis, Jango never returns even in flashbacks or prequels, leaving his son Boba and his many clones to carry out his legacy.

Jango Fett deserves more time to flesh out his story before Attack of the Clones. A prequel series could delve into his life and career as a bounty hunter, leading up to his recruitment by Count Dooku. Likely set before The Phantom Menace, such a series wouldn’t be hampered by too many requirements of the timeline, but could instead offer the deeper look into the world of bounty hunting that fans have wanted to see for years.
5Boba Fett Could Find Redemption With a (Different) Solo Series
The Book of Boba Fett Didn’t Focus on the Most Interesting Part of the Bounty Hunter’s Career
Image via DisneyBoba Fett is a very complicated character in the Star Wars fandom. A fan-favorite bounty hunter whom audiences essentially brought back from the dead by sheer force of popularity, the character’s approval rating is at an all-time low following his lackluster Disney+ series. With a second season of The Book of Boba Fett out of the question, Boba Fett deserves a shot at redemption in a very different project set at a different point in the Star Wars timeline.
The most interesting part of Boba Fett’s timeline isn’t the one that Lucasfilm chose to focus on in The Book of Boba Fett. Audiences still want to see more of the bounty hunter in the Imperial Era, when he was at the height of his career. A prequel series following a younger Boba Fett as he completes jobs for Jabba the Hutt would work wonders for his character, especially after his Disney+ spinoff. To make this project even more tantalizing, Disney could bring back Daniel Logan, who played a young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones, to play the character in the years leading up to the Original Trilogy.
4A Kylo Ren Spinoff Could Redeem a Major Sequel Trilogy Storyline
Ben Solo’s Redemption Arc Is Missing a Chapter
Image via LucasfilmKylo Ren is one of the most interesting new characters in the Sequel Trilogy. Once known as Ben Solo, the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, the young man was trained by his uncle Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Jedi. However, after becoming obsessed with the legacy of his grandfather Darth Vader, Ben turned to the Dark Side and joined the First Order under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke. Yet, over the course of the trilogy, Ben gradually comes back to the light, culminating in his redemption in Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker.
Ben Solo’s storyline is meant to parallel that of his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker. However, a major chunk of his story is missing. Unlike Anakin, audiences never get to see Ben train as a Jedi, gradually give into his darker desires, and eventually fall to the Dark Side. A prequel series depicting Ben Solo as a knight of Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order could finally bridge the gap in the character’s storyline and work wonders for the Sequel Trilogy in the process.
3Wedge Antilles Experienced the Fall of the Empire From a Cockpit
Star Wars Is Looking For Its Own “Top Gun”
Image via LucasfilmWedge Antilles is one of the most underrated characters in the Skywalker Saga. First introduced in the original Star Wars, Wedge was crucial to several major battles in the Galactic Civil War. He flew alongside Luke Skywalker in the Battle of Yavin, emerging as one of the few survivors of the conflict. Later, he aids the Rebel Alliance in the Battle of Hoth and the siege of the Second Death Star over Endor. Finally, an older Wedge returns to fight alongside his old friends in the Battle of Exegol.

Having appeared in four Star Wars movies, Wedge still has only a few minutes of screentime. Yet, he witnessed some of the biggest turning points in the history of the galaxy. A Wedge-centered spinoff could delve deeper into his character while also giving the franchise a starfighter-centered project that it seems to be looking for with other films like Star Wars: Starfighter and Rogue Squadron.
2A Commander Wolffe Series Could Depict the Bloody Side of the Clone Wars
The Wolf Pack Deserves More Screen Time
Image via LucasfilmWolffe was a Clone Commander in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Serving under Jedi General Plo Koon, Wolffe and his men, nicknamed “The Wolf Pack,” quickly became known for their skill and valor. However, Wolffe and his men obeyed Order 66 when it was given, leading to Master Plo’s death.
Wolffe is a character whom Star Wars has included in many stories but never focused on. A prequel series following his character could explore his actions during the Clone Wars, depicting a grittier perspective on the conflict than the animated series ever did. This would perfectly compliment the tone of other series like Andor as Star Wars finally explores the “war” aspect of its name in all the detail it deserves.
1Everyone Wants a Darth Vader Solo Series
Star Wars Needs to Focus More On Its Most Iconic Character
Image via LucasfilmIf there’s one character who fans desperately want to see more of, it’s Darth Vader. While the story of Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the Dark Side and eventual redemption comprises the Prequel and Original Trilogies, there is still a massive gap between these two tail ends of his arc. Star Wars still has room for one more Darth Vader story, putting the Dark Lord back in the spotlight one last time.
A mature, more violent series following Darth Vader and the Inquisitors as they hunt down Jedi post-Order 66 would make for one of the darkest Star Wars stories yet. The spinoff could showcase Vader as he grows to the height of his powers, straying further from the light in an ever-darkening galaxy. Such a series would give Star Wars fans more than enough reason to renew their Disney+ subscriptions.
