Anthony Yarde Beats Lyndon Arthur By Unanimous Decision, Settles Five-Year Trilogy
Anthony Yarde overcame a noble effort from Lyndon Arthur to beat the Mancunian by unanimous decision at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, settling their three-fight rivalry in the process.
The fight was the co-main event to Chris Eubank Jr-Conor Benn and streamed live on DAZN PPV.
The pair, having fought twice previously, know each other very well by now. Arthur won their first encounter in December 2020 by split decision but Yarde avenged that defeat with a fourth-round knockout win exactly one year later.
Tonight, it was to be the Ilford man’s night once again, winning on the cards unanimously with scores of 115-113, 116-112, 116-112.
Both men entered Spurs Stadium to a rapturous ovation, Arthur (24-3, 16 KOs) walking to Rihanna anthem ‘Run This Town’ before Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs), flanked by British grime artists D Double E and Chip, sauntered his way down to the ring with all the bravado he could muster.
The first round saw Yarde come out of the blocks quickly in an effort to overwhelm Arthur just as he did over three years ago when they met in their Copper Box rematch. Both men had to settle for a jab-off in the end, but it was Yarde who finished proceedings stronger.
Yarde brought more of the same energy in the second and third rounds, but struggled to land with any authority; Arthur more than capable of blocking and countering with the jab over the top himself.
The fourth stanza played out feebly as both men struggled to assert dominance in the middle of the ring. Once again it was Yarde, leading with left hooks, who would try to pry open his opponent’s defence.
Arthur, off the back foot, would get his jab going in the fifth. Clearly haunted by the fate he suffered in their rematch and wanting to perform how he did in their first duel, the Mancunian prioritised patience, much to the displeasure of 67,000 fans in the stadium.
Yarde pushed the pace and put pressure on Arthur in the sixth, trapping him against the ropes, landing uppercuts and body shots. Arthur wouldn’t wilt so soon, coming back with a couple of meaty right hands himself, but it was Yarde who finished stronger again, connecting with a pinpoint right cross of his own.
The seventh played out well for Arthur at first, using his jab effectively to stave off Yarde’s best attacks. However the Essex man came on strong at the end to perhaps nick the round his way.
And the ‘Beast from the East’ came out for the eighth with a vengeance, landing some heavy duty shots on his opponent towards the end of the three minutes, with Arthur evidently starting to feel the pace.
Yarde would operate with desperation in his work in the ninth, clearly sensing Arthur was beginning to tire and perhaps that his best work was behind him now. Nailed to the ropes, Arthur would ship the most punishment he’d had to face in the fight yet.
By the 10th, a clear pattern had emerged in which Arthur would look to get off his attacks where he could from the ropes while Yarde would pour on shot after shot to his man’s skull and solar plexus.
The final two rounds played out as custom, with Yarde pushing the pace and a tiresome Arthur looking to cover up. At the sound of the final bell, both men hugged it out after 28 rounds shared across three fights in four-and-a-half years.
Yarde, the winner – 2-1 the score. He will now go on to try and pursue a long-awaited clash with Joshua Buatsi as Arthur ponders what could have been with a rubber match victory.
