Dick Vitale calls out WNBA players, saying jealousy influenced their vote, ranking Caitlin Clark as only the 9th best guard despite her huge impact on the league:
The Indiana Fever star, who was named a captain for the All-Star game on July 19, still scored the highest amount of votes ever for a player on the ballot
Dick Vitale has a few choice words for the WNBA players who didn’t support Caitlin Clark during All-Star voting.
The iconic broadcaster took to X on Tuesday, July 1 to voice his opinion about how the Indiana Fever star was selected by her peers — as the ninth-best guard in the league.
“Absolutely PURE JEALOUSY that @WNBA players voted Caitlin Clark the 9th best guard,” Vitale, 86, wrote. “Some day they will realize what she has done for ALL of the players in the WNBA.”

Vitale then went on to add that because of the 23-year-old’s influence, the WNBA now flies its teams on chartered planes, and that Clark’s success has led to an increase in other players’ salaries, sold-out crowds and better television ratings.
The voting process consisted of 50% fan votes, 25% player votes and 25% media votes, according to the league.
While Clark scored a WNBA-record most votes ever — 1,293,536 — her fellow players ranked her the ninth-best guard on the players’ ballot.

Clark, along with the Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier, were named team captains, which means the two will choose “playground-style” their own teammates from a pool of eight other starters.
Those players include A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Nneka Ogwumike, Clark’s teammate Aliyah Boston, Allisha Gray, Satou Sabally and rookie sensation Paige Bueckers.
Clark — who has missed the last two games, including a much-anticipated matchup with Bueckers in Dallas last week with a groin injury — is currently in a shooting slump, and has gone 1-for-23 from 3-point-range over her last three games.
Still, the Iowa product is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals, while already missing seven games this season due to injury.
On Sunday, after Clark found out from league commissioner Cathy Engelbert that she had been selected a captain, the basketball star had a prediction for the game, which takes place on her home court, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, on July 19.
“We about to get that dub, Cathy,” Clark said.
