Ons Jabeur suffered a heartbreak on the opening day of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships as she was forced to retire against Viktoriya Tomova in the first round on Monday. She was trailing 7-6 (5), 2-0 when she decided to quit.
Jabeur was reduced to tears early in the match as she walked to her chair after five games. She called for the tournament physio promptly and had her blood pressure and vitals checked. She then opted for a medical timeout for further treatment.
The Tunisian returned to court after a 14-minute halt and competed strenuously but couldn’t maintain her level in the second set, hence retiring due to illness.
This was Jabeur’s earliest exit from Wimbledon since 2019. She reached the finals of the grass-court Major in 2022 and 2023, losing to Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, respectively. In 2024, she reached the third round and lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 14 seed, reached the second round of Wimbledon by defeating Hungarian Anna Bondar 6-3, 6-1 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday.
Svitolina needed only 63 minutes to finish the job. She hit two aces, 18 winners and broke Bondar four times to claim the first win of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
The result meant that the Ukrainian remains undefeated in 21 first-round appearances at the Grand Slams in the last seven years.
Svitolina, ranked No 13, will play the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva and Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.
