Jake Paul’s Reaction to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Calling Him a ‘Drug Cheat’

Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Ahead of their showdown in California this weekend, things got very heated when Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr came face to face.

In his previous fight, Paul headlined Netflix’s globally streamed boxing event last November, defeating former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. It was Paul’s fifth straight victory since losing to Tommy Fury in early 2023, taking his record to an impressive 11-1.

Although his recent appearances have been quite sporadic, Chavez Jr has put back-to-back wins together for the first time in almost a decade. Victories over UFC veteran Uriah Hall and David Zegarra have extended the former WBC middleweight champ’s record to 54-6-1.

Chavez Jr has enjoyed an overall successful career, but he is well beyond his prime. Paul, on the other hand, continues to improve with every fight and has a clear physical advantage over his upcoming opponent. But when the two boxers clashed during a promotional clip shared by Happy Punch on X, the Mexican boxer accused Paul’s success of being down to more than just what he does during training camps.

The Problem Child wasn’t impressed with the accusations

Chavez Jr, who was accompanied by comedian and social media personality DoKnow, translated some of his speech – including a very direct accusation.

“He said you look like you on some s***,” translated DoKnow, suggesting that Paul was using PEDs ahead of the fight. While Paul looked taken aback, he didn’t deny Chavez’s accusation, merely replying, “But VADA’s (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) here today, what the f***?”

From here, the exchanges grew more heated, with Paul hurling his own insults, calling the Mexican boxer “dumb” and “an angry little elf” for accusing The Problem Child of doping.

The experienced Chavez, sensing Paul’s agitation, continued his line of argument. “When you fight Tyson, you don’t do anti-doping. When I fight in Tampa for the first time in 20 years, then don’t make me anti-doping in your fight. So it’s something to you. Never be like you, man.”

Chavez Jr’s comments were in relation to the recent revelation that reportedly neither Paul nor Tyson were drug-tested prior to their November bout.

“I don’t even know what you’re talking about,” responded a defensive Paul, his eyes shifting away from the gaze of Chavez Jr. While Paul has the physical advantage over his opponent heading into the fight, Paul had no answers for the tough-talking Mexican. And it was a weakness that many X users picked up on in the comments, with many agreeing with Chavez Jr.

“Jake Paul looked like he took that personal and was getting really defensive and uncomfortable. He for sure is on the juice,” wrote one user. “Jake needs to work on his lying face, very bad at lying,” wrote another, commenting on Paul’s inability to counter his opponent’s accusations.

However, not all the comments were in Chavez Jr’s favour, with one user pointing out his own history of drug testing failures. “Chavez Jr tested positive for furosemide yet says he never cheated,” argued one user. Chavez Jr’s positive furosemide test in 2009 led to a suspension. He also received a ban for testing positive for marijuana in 2012, as well as a suspension for refusing to take a drug test in 2019.
