Sonay Kartal makes British tennis history as she beats Jelena Ostapenko in the first round at Wimbledon

Sonay Kartal has defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of Wimbledon, beating the former French Open champion 7-5 2-6 6-2.

Kartal showed off an array of shot-making skills to dispatch the 2017 French Open champion, finishing the match with a comprehensive ace and backhand winner.

 

The Brit was utterly dominant in the final set, racing to a 5-0 lead. Although Ostapenko showed some fight to pull the score back to 5-2, Kartal closed out the match to advance at Wimbledon.

By beating Ostapenko, Kartal achieved a landmark feat for British tennis.

Sonay Kartal is the first British player in the Open Era to defeat a former Grand Slam Champion in Wimbledon’s Women’s Singles First Round

Kartal’s victory was not only a momentous result in the present – it had historical implications too.

By beating Ostapenko, she became the first British player in the Open Era to defeat a former Grand Slam Champion in Wimbledon’s Women’s Singles First Round.

The British number three showed her fighting spirit throughout the match, battling back from a first-set deficit and showing off her ice-cool demeanour when dismissing Ostapenko in the third set.

Kartal hit three aces and won five of eight break-point opportunities. Meanwhile, Ostapenko only converted four of her 15 break-point chances.

Kartal says Ostapenko victory is ‘by far one of the toughest matches I have played’

Speaking on-court to the BBC on Monday afternoon, Kartal said: “That was by far one of the toughest matches I have played.”

“I struggled against the big hitters, so to be able to get that win today after she had beaten me easily last week.

“I appreciate all you guys coming out, when I needed you most you were there.”

Kartal will face Bulgarian player Viktoriya Tomova in the next round as she looks to create more history at the championships.
