Queen Latifah just took her final bow as Robyn McCall, but did she get a happy ending?

On Sunday, May 4, the season 5 finale of The Equalizer aired, concluding the CBS series four years after its premiere, and Robyn finally got the happy ending she deserved.

Things were looking good at the start of the episode as she and Dante (Tory Kittles) took a romantic getaway just the two of them, but trouble, of course, had to follow them there, and Salazar (Juan Javier Cardenas) and his team finds their cabin — and shoots Dante.

Robyn is then taken hostage by Salazar and his team, prompting Harry (Adam Goldberg) and Mel (Liza Lapira) to come to the rescue and save her, and she finally puts an end to Salazar.

Dante’s losing blood — and consciousness — fast by the time Robyn finds him, but he proposes just before passing out, leaving Robyn waiting restlessly to give him her answer.

She says yes, and the series closes out with a rare happy ever after. Robyn and Dante celebrate their engagement with a party at their home, and are joined by Harry, Mel, Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes), Curtis (Christopher B. Duncan) and Vi (Lorraine Toussaint).

As for the rest of the cast’s stories, Harry and Mel dabble with the idea of putting a pause on equalizing, but they decide not to stop quite yet, Delilah continues her pursuit of a college acceptance at Howard and Vi and Curtis decide to find a new forever home together.

The choice to wrap up the season finale so neatly was “definitely on purpose,” showrunner Joe Wilson told TV Insider. “We didn’t want to end with a cliffhanger.”

They “designed it in a way that can feel like an ending, but there’s so much more to unpack,” as they didn’t know yet what the show’s fate would be at the network at the time of writing. CBS announced it wouldn’t be renewing the series days before the finale aired on Sunday.

Still, Wilson is hopeful that there could be more to come from The Equalizer world, even if it’s not at CBS.

“If we do get it, there are wedding bells. We will see that wedding,” he said, referring to Robyn and Dante’s nuptials.

Should the wedding play out onscreen, he teased that it would be “crazier than the proposal” and “feature-worthy.”
