“We don’t want this trash”: ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ IMAX Release Update Divides Fans

Amidst the competition against other industry juggernauts, Jurassic World: Rebirth is set to miss out on an IMAX run.

SUMMARY

Jurassic World: Rebirth will not have an IMAX run in the U.S.

This might’ve boiled down to the crowded nature of the July slate.

The movie will harken back to the IP’s roots per screenwriter David Koepp.

In 2023, amidst the Barbenheimer phenomenon, Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning had to vacate a substantial portion of its IMAX screenings to make room for them. Although it’s an entirely different case for The Final Reckoning, which will witness a three-week exclusive IMAX run, this time around, Jurassic World: Rebirth will have to make a compromise.

Even though the franchise is synonymous with its visual spectacle, the movie is set to miss out on an IMAX run in the U.S., and fans are mixed about this predicament.

Like Dead ReckoningJurassic World: Rebirth has the unfortunate luck of clashing against other giants. Not only is it set to collide with F1 upon its release, but Superman will debut on the big screen just a week after, followed by The Fantastic Four: First Steps on the 25th of the same month.

Considering that Superman was shot entirely with IMAX-certified red cameras, it was already a given that the movie would warrant a substantial portion of the IMAX screenings in the US.

Similar was the case with Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Brad Pitt‘s F1, which were entirely shot for IMAX. Although the Jurassic World franchise has always been a box-office darling, despite its less-than-thrilling critical reception in the last decade, the revelation that it’ll not be getting an IMAX run has fans divided.

While some are indifferent, as the last few entries have done little to entice fans beyond the visual extravaganza, considering the movie is being marketed as a return to the original’s roots, many are understandably disappointed.

On the flip side, the Scarlett Johansson-led feature is confirmed to have an IMAX run in China per CEO Richard Gelfond, and the movie is also set to release in Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, and RealD 3D.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is said to be a return to the roots for the franchise

Despite proving to be box-office juggernauts, the modern trilogy hasn’t exactly lived up to the bar set by the original, especially Dominion. As a result, instead of advancing on the ideas of the recent entries, Jurassic World: Rebirth is eyeing to harken back to the franchise’s glory days by confining the story to an island.

We wanted to recapture the idea that we are in the dinosaurs’ environment. The last few movies were exploring the idea of, ‘Hey, what would it be like if they were in our environment?’ They did that very well, and now we wanted to explore how it felt to go back to theirs.

With the July slate crowded with high-octane blockbusters, it’s easy to see why Rebirth hasn’t been able to secure an IMAX run in the US. However, given the IP’s reputation as a box-office giant, it’ll be interesting to see if it can reignite the franchise after the Dominion’s less-than-thrilling critical reception.
