Why Jake Paul is at Risk of Being Stripped of His World Ranking By WBA

Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Jake Paul was controversially awarded a spot in the World Boxing Association’s (WBA) top 15 cruiserweights as a result of his underwhelming victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in late June. However, just days after he gained his ranking, it could be stripped away from him.

Paul’s number 14 ranking with the governing body made him eligible to take on WBA Cruiserweight Champion Giberto Ramirez later this year. In order to build the planned fight, Ramirez fought on the undercard of Paul vs Chavez Jr, claiming a unanimous decision victory over Juniel Dorticos.

The idea of Paul getting a shot at a recognised world title hadn’t gone down well with fans – and it now appears that serious concerns have been raised over the ranking handed to the social media sensation.

Jake Paul Calls Out 5 Professional Boxers After Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Win

Paul’s record is so lacking in terms of recognised boxers that his win over Chavez Jr is arguably the best of his career. The former Disney Channel star did claim a victory over heavyweight legend Mike Tyson last November – although it should be pointed out that ‘Iron Mike’ was 58 years old at the time.

Elsewhere, ‘The Problem Child’ has padded his record with victories over MMA legends such as Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz – with none being renowned for their boxing abilities.

In a rare example of Paul fighting a boxer with a reasonable reputation, he faced Tommy Fury in February 2023 in Saudi Arabia, where he lost. The Brit won the fight via split decision, despite tasting the canvas in the eighth round.

Why Jake Paul Could Lose His World Title Opportunity

His world ranking could be revoked soon

Per a social media post from Ring Magazine, the WBA are set to review their decision to rank Paul after “heavy criticism and outrage from other ranked contenders”. That review will begin in less than 10 days’ time at the WBA European convention in Madrid.

Ring concluded in unusually brutal fashion, ripping into Paul by stating:

“The WBA ranked Paul at No. 14 in its cruiserweight rankings after his lackluster win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last Saturday. Chavez Jr. wasn’t ranked at cruiserweight and his last notable win came in 2012 at middleweight. Paul has never defeated a ranked boxer, unless you count his “fight” with the 58-year-old Mike Tyson.”

Potentially already having heard about the WBA plans to review his ranking, Paul called out WBC Cruiserweight Champion, Badou Jack, in the hours before The Ring’s statement was published.

“Shoutout to the WBA and Gilberto for being disruptors and not being afraid to recognize me,” the 28-year-old tweeted. “Seeing all these lists with current champion Badou Jack. Give me him next.”

Both Ramirez and Jack were among the five fighters called out by Paul following his win over Chavez. However, given how much resistance there was to the WBA’s decision to rank Paul, it is unlikely that the WBC will be in any hurry to insert Paul into their own rankings and allow him a shot at their champion.

In response to the news of the WBA reconsidering his rankings, Paul’s promotional company, MVP, took to Instagram to declare:

“Can’t say we are surprised, but no matter what, he [Paul] will not be stopped. Fall down 10 times, get back up every single time. Expect them to hate what they can’t control.”

Meanwhile, Paul himself simply responded by stating: “Life is good.” It remains to be seen who he will face next, but his world title dreams may well have to be placed on hold for now.
