Jelly Roll’s powerful lyrics often bring people to tears, and his wife, Bunnie Xo, is no exception.
With his new album Beautifully Broken set to debut on Friday, October 11, the singer-songwriter released the 22-song tracklist on Tuesday, October 8, three days ahead of the album’s release. Also on Tuesday, Bunnie, 44, posted a clip of one of the tracks on her TikTok account for her 6.5 million followers to hear. In the short video, Bunnie records herself up close listening to the song that she described as “one of the most emotional songs my husband has written for the US.” The video has 2.6 million views at the time of publication.

The gut-wrenching lyrics detail the story of a girl facing abuse. In the first verse, Jelly Roll, 39, sings, “Her mom and daddy trusted that neighbor she grew up with; they were working days and nights, so he took her home from school sometimes. One day, when she came home, it looked like she saw a ghost; she snuck up to her room to cry with a lifelong scar to hide.”
In the second verse, the Grammy-nominated artist sings, “Young enough for princess posters, suddenly she’s lifetimes older. He stole the innocence from her before she even knew the meaning of the word. Hours in the shower steam, still never felt clean as she curls into a ball, somethings you can’t wash off.”
In the last section, a female vocalist sings, “Don’t judge me if I get too high tonight,” before the song cuts out.
The song evidently moved Bunnie as she captioned her 57-secon
d video, “This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. If you’re a survivor – IT WAS WRITTEN FOR YOU. Its called “Past Yesterday” & it drops on his new album 10/11 #jellyroll #jellyandbunnie.”
While Bunnie said the song is titled “Past Yesterday,” according to the tracklist, there is no song with that title. However, there is one song that features female artist Ilsey Juber called “When the Drugs Don’t Work,” which could be the one Bunnie played for fans.
Jelly Roll and Bunnie wed in 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and briefly broke up in 2018 before reconciling.
