The very first winner of American Idol made an emotional return to the stage last night as the farewell season kicked off its live shows.

Kelly Clarkson, who won the inaugural season back in 2002, took on the role of guest judge before delivering a heart-wrenching performance that left the audience and judges in awe.

As she sang Piece By Piece, tears streamed down her face, adding even more depth to the already powerful moment. The judges, including Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, were visibly moved, with both struggling to hold back their emotions.

After her performance, Clarkson, who is expecting her second child, explained why the moment hit so hard. “I’m pregnant, it’s nostalgic, and I can’t believe this is the last season. Really sorry I just bawled,” she said, still wiping away tears.

Following the show, she reflected on the night, calling it the perfect way to close the chapter on her Idol journey. “What an emotional night. Thank you, American Idol, for such a beautiful beginning & a perfect ending,” she shared.

Fox officially decided to end the long-running series after its viewership declined, with the show averaging 11.6 million viewers in its final seasons—including DVR playback. At its peak in 2006, American Idol was a ratings juggernaut, drawing nearly 36 million viewers when Taylor Hicks took the title.

Over the years, the show launched the careers of several stars, including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as finalists like Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert, who now tours with Queen.
