Mississippi Teacher Jamal Roberts Brings The House Down With His Powerful Rendition of Jelly Roll’s “Liar” on American Idol
Season 23 of American Idol is heating up as the Top 24 contestants perform for America’s votes for the very first time! Sunday night’s episode took us to the stunning Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii, where the first group of twelve hopefuls hit the stage, mentored by none other than Ashanti and Jelly Roll.
One of the night’s standout moments came from Mississippi school teacher and proud dad of two, Jamal Roberts. Fans may remember Jamal from his unforgettable audition where he performed “Mary Jane,” earning high praise from Lionel Richie, who applauded his heartfelt storytelling, and Luke Bryan, who called out his authentic Southern soul.
Throughout Hollywood Week, Jamal kept that momentum going with flawless covers of Teddy Swims and Chris Stapleton, securing his well-deserved spot in the Top 24.
For his next big moment, Jamal chose to tackle Jelly Roll’s 2024 hit “Liar” — a song packed with raw emotion and meaning. Originally written as a personal anthem about addiction and self-worth, “Liar” struck a chord with fans and was eventually released as the second single from Jelly Roll’s album Beautifully Broken.
Before stepping on stage, Jamal opened up to mentors Jelly Roll and Ashanti about his mission:
“I want to show the young fellas that you ain’t gotta have a gun, you ain’t gotta sell drugs. Everybody can chase their dream and be a better person.”

His performance wasn’t just music — it was a testimony. Jamal poured his heart and soul into the song, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Jelly Roll, overcome with emotion during rehearsals, told Jamal:
“You brought a tear to me, Jamal. That wasn’t a performance — you were testifying. I feel the pain in your voice. You can’t teach that. I am your champion. You are representing a group of misrepresented people.”
The judges were equally blown away.
Lionel Richie joked, “If you had passed the collection plate, I would have given all the money.”
Carrie Underwood called the performance “a possession.”
And Luke Bryan summed it up perfectly:
“Every time you sing, you sing like it might be the last time you ever sing. That’s how you have to approach this business.”
Jamal’s performance of “Liar” was one of the most powerful moments of the night. Watch his incredible rendition below — and don’t forget to tune in Monday night (April 14) to see if he secures his spot in the Top 20!
