Todd Chrisley was in disbelief seeing his wife Julie for the first time after they’d both spent more than two years in prison.

Todd, 57, appeared with his daughter Savannah Chrisley at a press conference in Nashville on Friday, May 30, three days after President Donald Trump issued full pardons for both Todd and Julie, who were convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud in 2022.

The Chrisley Knows Best star was asked by a reporter what it felt like to finally reunite with his wife after they had been serving sentences at different prisons since January 2023, and he said that “it was overwhelming.”

“Julie and I have been together for over 30 years, and she is my best friend. We have raised our children together [and] a grandchild is now my legal daughter, and we’ve had all the ups and downs,” he said.

“You know, we’ve gone through breast cancer together. We’ve gone through multiple medical procedures with her, and it was great to be home. No matter where that is, as long as she’s there, it’s home.”

Todd shared that he felt similarly shocked when he left the Federal Prison Camp Pensacola in Florida on May 28, where he was collected by Savannah, 27.

“I don’t even know that I felt like it was real at that moment,” he said. “And I woke up the first morning, and I was looking around, I’m like, ‘This is really real. I’m home.’”

He continued, “I was grateful for our family to be all back in the same room, to be together, to share a meal together, to pray together, and to know that we’re still in the fight together.”

Before making their first public statement at the press conference, Savannah spoke to PEOPLE about how “amazing” the last few days have been getting her parents home.

“It doesn’t feel real. We were going to bed last night. We’re like, ‘Is this real?’ And then, I wake up this morning and my mom’s walking into my bedroom and I’m like, it’s absolutely insane!”

“We are just so grateful and ready to kind of start getting back to normal life, obviously, the best we can,” she said. “Everything’s a whirlwind right now, and it’s kind hard to live a normal life with how things are right now, but we’ll get there.”

The Unlocked with Savannah Chrisley podcast host, who has been fighting for her parents’ release since their 2022 conviction and became the legal guardian of Chloe, 12, and Grayson, 19, while Todd and Julie were imprisoned, said her parents are “in shock right now.”

“It’s just a big adjustment when you’re in prison for two and a half years, and then you go back to so-called normal life. I can’t imagine,” she said.

“I just think it’s a lot for them, but they’re enjoying it. We’re all spending time together,” she continued. “And obviously, when they’re ready to talk about their feelings and emotions, I know that they will articulate it well, like they always do.”
