This change is supported by research. A pioneering study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education indicates that the average American woman no longer wears a size 14; rather, she typically wears a size 16 or 18.

The research examined data from over 5,500 American women, revealing that the average waist size has risen from 34.9 inches to 37.5 inches in the past twenty years. Lead researcher Susan Dunn highlights the profound significance of these figures, stating, “Recognizing the true average can be empowering—it enables women to perceive themselves more accurately and fosters greater confidence in their own bodies.”

Co-authors Dunn and Deborah Christel urge the fashion industry to align with reality. “These women are here to stay,” Dunn asserts. “And they deserve clothing that accommodates them—not clothing that compels them to conform.”
