“How can we make change if we run away from the darkness?”

It’s been a tough month for Justin Bieber. Not only is his fanbase concerned, reports claim that Justin’s friends are worried about the singer, that Hailey Bieber was “in tears” after seeing footage of him smoking at Coachella, and that he’s $20 million in debt (a report his team denied). And in his newest Instagram post, Justin Bieber alluded to the rumors, saying he wants “nothing to do with Hollywood” and pushing back on paparazzi.

“Everyone telling me to move from L.A.,” he began, “U think I’m gonna get bullied to leave where my influence is most needed? How can we make change if we run away from the darkness?” Justin continued, “I too have been caught up in the transactional nature of Hollywood. It’s embarrassing but with that said I want nothing to do with that as a grown adult with a wife and son, I just want to be submerged in the culture learning from any and everyone.” He concluded his statement, pledging to be “a proponent and advocate for LOVE AND EQUALITY.”

The statement, set to Lil Wayne’s “How to Love,” came after Justin uploaded a new video of yet another paparazzi confrontation. In the clip, you can see photographers waiting for him on the street and trailing him as he moves towards his car. His bodyguards try to block the paparazzi from getting a clean shot, but there’s only so much they can do. “This has to stop,” Justin wrote in the caption.

It’s unclear if Justin is planning on taking any actual legal or political action to fight against paparazzi, a strategy that has worked in the past for celebs like Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry, and Kristen Bell. In the early 2010s, these actors were part of a campaign for laws protecting minors and celebrity children from the paparazzi. They also got media outlets like People, to stop publishing unauthorized photos of celebrity children, which successfully helped phase out the practice entirely.

Putting all that aside, it’s also unclear what this statement means for fans. When Justin says that he wants “nothing to do with” Hollywood, does he mean the culture or his professional music career? Whatever his intentions, it definitely sounds like fans already waiting for Justin to release any new music will just have to stay in line.
