Madison Beer and Justin Bieber have been through a lot together. In the 2010s, both musicians got discovered as teens thanks to their YouTube covers and even shared a manager in Scooter Braun. In her latest cover story for Cosmopolitan, the “Make You Mine” hitmaker opened up about her rise to fame and showed support for Justin and his wife, Hailey Bieber.

When speaking about the early days of her music career, Madison revealed that industry folks would liken her to the “Ghost of You” singer and refer to her as “the female Justin Bieber” before she was dropped by her label, manager, and lawyers when she was 16.

“I felt like I was a dollar sign to them and when I didn’t bring in enough money, they didn’t care about me anymore,” she shared. “Maybe they shouldn’t have signed a 12-year-old without thinking of the consequences of what that was going to do.”

The artist, whose song “Make You Mine” was nominated for a Grammy this year, continued, “The reason it was a thing was because Scooter had signed me and obviously Scooter had signed Justin. Justin had posted a cover and I had posted a cover, so it felt synchronized. But Justin was also only a teenager when I got signed—he hadn’t even experienced his adult life yet. He’s been through so much, too.”

The Cosmo cover girl gushed about Justin’s wife and Rhode founder, Hailey, and revealed that she and JB have still kept in touch after all these years.

“I love him and Hailey very much. I was with them recently and we were like, ‘How special that we’ve known each other for so long,’” she said.

“I’ve known Hailey since I was 10, and I’ve known Justin since I was 12. We’re still in each other’s lives and now they’re married with a baby,” she added, referring to the couple’s son, Jack Blues Bieber.

Madison got candid about her grievances in the music industry and how her relationships have changed over the years. Despite having been through so much, she revealed that she’s creating a new album, and has a message for those who dipped once she was initially dropped at 16.

“But in terms of certain other people, don’t think that if and hopefully when this album goes crazy, I’m not going to be like, ‘You didn’t give me the time of fucking day and now you want to be my best friend. Goodbye. Get out of my face, genuinely,’” she said.
