Why Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Skipped the 2025 Met Gala

Earlier this spring, Selena Gomez was in New York City filming Only Murders in the Building. On Thursday though, she was seen at the Rare Beauty Summit in Los Angeles. Fast-forward to this evening, and both she and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, were missing from the Met Gala’s red carpet in Manhattan.

Gomez hasn’t attended the fashion event since 2018. Blanco, on the other hand, has never been to the Met Gala. While they weren’t photographed out today, they were active on social media.

Before the New York event began, the couple shared a new performance video for their joint song, “Sunset Blvd.” It was filmed at their home in L.A., in the same bedroom where they recorded the song.

In 2018, Gomez left the Met Gala early in part because of her embarrassment over her tan. She later told Glamour UK that it was her most “memorable” beauty disaster.

She explained, “While I was getting ready for the Met Gala a few years ago, we put on a bit of tanning lotion and it looked beautiful, but as the night went on it kept getting darker and darker. When I sat down [inside the event], I saw a photo of myself, and it looked completely orange. And here I am at this prestigious event. My first thought was, ‘I have to get out of here!’”

She posted footage of herself leaving on Instagram that night, captioning it, “Me when I saw my pictures from MET ”

Gomez has had a busy 2025, having just wrapped up awards season and promotion for her and Blanco’s first joint album, I Said I Love You First.

The couple also announced their engagement in December. They haven’t started wedding planning but have been making the most of their time together in New York City.

Blanco explained during the pair’s appearance on On Purpose With Jay Shetty, “I’m just happy she says yes. I don’t even care about the next step. No, but…we’ve been doing so much stuff. We haven’t even gotten to really just like bask in the glory. So it’s like, I think we’re looking forward to doing that in New York a little bit.”

Of their wedding planning, Gomez added, “We’ll just see. We’re not in any rush. And I’m excited to see what happens.”
