Owen Cooper: From Warrington to Worldwide Acclaim — A Star is Born in ‘Adolescence’
There are moments in entertainment when a fresh face appears and the world collectively asks, “Who is that?” This year, that name is Owen Cooper, and the breakout British star is lighting up screens—and hearts—with his stunning performance in Adolescence, a raw, single-shot Netflix series that critics are calling “a masterclass in emotion and control.”
The moment Owen stepped onto the Tonight Show stage, Jimmy Fallon couldn’t contain his admiration: “Man, you were unbelievable in this series.” And he wasn’t the only one. Rumors are swirling online, fan edits are multiplying, and even Leonardo DiCaprio sent Cooper a personal video praising his work. For a 19-year-old from Warrington, it’s a meteoric rise that feels almost surreal.
“It Was My First Time in America…”
Cooper’s first trip to North America was just a few weeks ago—straight to New York City. “I love it,” he said with his easy grin, though he added with cheeky honesty, “I was expecting the buildings to be a bit taller.” But his most scathing review? American candy.
“I hate it. It’s all Cheetos and nonsense,” Cooper joked, pulling out a basket of British snacks for Fallon to try. He proudly introduced Maltesers, Fruit Pastilles, and Monster Munch—“the caviar of corner shops,” he called them.
Fallon returned fire with Sour Patch Kids and Fig Newtons, even dunking the latter in Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. “Oh! That’s unreal,” Owen finally admitted, cheeks puffed with surprise. “I really enjoy that.” Fallon wasn’t sure whether to believe him, given Cooper’s acting chops.
“People Want You to Play Spider-Man”
The Internet is ablaze with fan campaigns casting Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man. When Fallon brought it up, Cooper looked genuinely surprised. “What? No!” he laughed, admitting it’s been his dream since childhood. “I’ve seen the TikToks. I never expected it—it was just something I wanted.”
He credits Tom Holland, who starred in The Impossible, as his inspiration. “I’ve watched that movie over 40 times,” he said, eyes lighting up. “It was the first time I really cried at a film. I just looked at Tom and thought, ‘I want to do what he’s doing.’”
From Football to Film
Cooper was once set on becoming a professional footballer (or “soccer player,” for the Americans). “I had two older brothers, so I was always playing football,” he recalled. But four years ago, something shifted. “I started drama lessons… and that was it.”
That passion turned into performance. In Adolescence, Cooper plays Jamie, a troubled teenager navigating family chaos and internal rage. The kicker? The series is shot entirely in oners—single takes, no cuts. If one actor messes up, they start from scratch.
“You can’t mess up,” Cooper said. “In Episode 2, Ashley Walters said the wrong name in the last scene. We had to reshoot the whole thing.” It’s grueling, but the result is something powerful, something real. And sometimes, something unexpected—like the time Owen yawned during a take. “You can’t fake a yawn,” he shrugged. “I was tired.”
“I Hate Watching Myself”
Despite the buzz, Cooper is shy about the spotlight. “I haven’t watched the show,” he admitted. “If I see anything on TikTok or Instagram, I just scroll past. It just cringes me out proper badly.” Yet praise keeps pouring in. And not just from fans.
The most surreal moment? A message from Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I was supposed to go to the beach with Jack Thorne [the writer], but he backed out,” Cooper explained. “Then he sent me a video. It was Leo, sitting next to him, saying, ‘Hey, Owen, I’m such a massive fan of Adolescence.’” Cooper’s eyes widened. “What?!”
From Humble to Heroic
People are comparing Cooper to Robert De Niro. Fallon even said it out loud. “It’s weird,” Owen admitted, shaking his head. “I’m just a normal kid from Warrington. To be even in the same sentence as De Niro is crazy.”
He hasn’t let the praise change him. He still brings snacks to interviews. He still calls crisps “crisps,” not “chips.” And when asked if he watches his own clips, he smiles and shrugs: “I like doing press, but I don’t want to get involved in the hype.”
That humility is part of his charm. But underneath it all is raw talent—a vulnerability and intensity that makes Adolescence so unforgettable.
Final Bite: Monster Munch and More
Fallon closed the segment with more snacks. “I’ve never had Monster Munch,” he said, popping one into his mouth. “It’s actually great.” Cooper grinned. “Pickled onion flavor,” he announced proudly.
As laughter and applause erupted in the studio, Fallon summed up what everyone was thinking: “Owen Cooper is the real deal.”
And as Owen munched his way through another Malteser, you got the sense that he might not believe the hype—but the rest of the world absolutely does.
