Rich Paul Sends Clear Lakers Message After LeBron James News

After the Los Angeles Lakers suffered a devastating 103-96 Game 5 loss Wednesday night, all eyes have transitioned again to the offseason decision of 21-time All-Star LeBron James. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer just completed his 22nd season, tied for the most all-time with Vince Carter, and is still playing at an All-NBA level.

While James did not reveal whether he would return for his 23rd season, reports have arisen that should he decide to return with the Lakers, he would not be taking a pay cut to help further construct the roster (via Jovan Buha and Sam Amick of the Athletic).

James has a player option for the final year of his deal worth $52.6 million, over a third of the team’s payroll for next season.

Following this news, James’ agent and lifelong friend, Rich Paul, went on NBA insider Chris Haynes’ podcast to discuss the Lakers.

“I just really didn’t think that the roster for the Lakers was anywhere close to a championship-type roster, you know? And that’s not making excuses. It’s just a fact,” said Paul. “And it’s very hard to build a team for today and tomorrow … You’ve got to have assets. You’ve got to have cap flexibility. You’ve got to have draft capital.”

While some may overlook these statements due to it being the opinion of an agent, it feels rather important due to the strong bond he and James have. The four-time MVP has not shied away from demanding roster additions in the past, not just with the Lakers but with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers as well. Lakers general manager and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka has already spoken on the expectations of the 20-time All-NBA selection.

“I think LeBron’s gonna have high expectations for the roster, and we’re gonna do everything we can to meet those,” said Pelinka (via NBA on ESPN).
