New Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham left fans stunned when she claimed she is not yet married because she is “a rat”.

The 28-year-old, who put pen-to-paper with the Fever on January 31 as part of a four-team trade involving the Dallas Wings, Connecticut Sun, and her former team Phoenix Mercury, made the humorous admission in a social media Q&A this week as she endeared herself to her new fanbase.

The veteran guard, who made the switch to Indiana following six seasons in Phoenix, took Instagram for the fan interaction while waiting for a delayed flight, where one follower took the chance to ask her why she isn’t married, prompting a hilarious response from the WNBA star.

Rather than playing it safe with a generic answer, Cunningham instead posted a video of herself chugging a drink courtside at the WNBA All-Star Game in July, coupled with the response: “I’ve received this question A LOT.”

“I think it’s cause I’m a rat and an embarrassment to society. Also this was all ice and doesn’t do my skills any justice,” she continued, referencing the video, before adding: “But back to being not married, it’ll happen before I die CAUSE WON’T HE DO IT.”

After being picked by the Mercury in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft, Cunningham has risen to fame within the league, boasting a 182-game record in which she has averaged 7.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Her standout season came in 2022, when she scored an average of 12.6 points, along with 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

That, however, came after four seasons at the collegiate level with the Missouri Tigers, where she was nominated the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2016, the same year she also featured in the SEC All-Freshman Team of the Season. Cunningham was also a 3x First-team All-SEC and a Third-team All-American.

Back in January, she joined the Fever as part of a trade that also included the No. 19 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from Phoenix. During her media introduction on Tuesday, she expressed excitement about her new chapter, describing the move as “refreshing”.

“I’ve been in Phoenix the last six years, was drafted out there. I’ve had a really great time. I’ve been very blessed with being around a lot of GOATs in the game, and learning the game on another level. But again, this is just a new style and this is the style that I thrive in,” Cunningham said.

She’s also confident about her prospects in Indiana, aiming for a championship win and expressing excitement over teaming up with WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark, who herself is looking to lead a postseason playoff charge once more after creating history with Indiana in her rookie season.

“She has changed our game in the best possible way and in every way,” Cunningham said. “And so, just to be alongside her and maybe relieve the pressure of being able to shoot and spread the court for her to go do her thing.”
