The Weeknd Says Tom Cruise Secretly Changed His Life Forever—Reveals Hidden Role in His Career Explosion and Emotional Story Behind “HURRY UP TOMORROW” That No One Knew Until Now
The Weeknd Talks Crashing a Graduation Party, Tom Cruise’s Influence, and Creating His Most Ambitious Album-Film Ever, Hurry Up Tomorrow
On a lively night filled with surprises, gratitude, and emotional depth, The Weeknd—also known as Abel Tesfaye—sat down with Jimmy Fallon and gave one of his most revealing interviews to date. From crashing a college graduation party to crafting an album-film hybrid inspired by a personal crisis, the conversation offered fans a front-row seat into the life of one of music’s most elusive and innovative stars.
A Surprise Graduation Party He’ll Never Forget
The show opened with Jimmy and The Weeknd exchanging high energy, clearly still buzzing from an earlier shared stunt: crashing a college graduation party. “I didn’t expect it to be that crazy,” The Weeknd laughed, still surprised by the wild reaction from unsuspecting students. Fallon chimed in, “What if they hated us?”—a thought both had genuinely worried about.
But the students didn’t hate them. In fact, when Fallon walked out first and the students screamed, The Weeknd knew it was going to work. “When they screamed for you, I thought, ‘Okay, they might like me too,’” he joked.
How Tom Cruise Accidentally Helped Make ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ a Hit
As the conversation shifted to music, Fallon reminded the audience that The Weeknd’s 2015 hit “Can’t Feel My Face” had once been featured on a lip-sync battle segment by none other than Tom Cruise.
“Did you see that?” Fallon asked.
“I definitely saw that,” The Weeknd replied, laughing. “It actually helped the song. Like, it helped it peak to the record-breaking top.”
He then admitted, “I’ve never met Tom Cruise, but I’m a huge fan.” He rattled off favorites from The Color of Money and Rain Man to Mission: Impossible, earning big cheers from the crowd.
Though Cruise likely didn’t know how pivotal that moment was for The Weeknd, the singer made a playful gesture of appreciation by reading a dramatic, mock movie trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. “I had to do it for Tom,” he smiled. “Respect.”
From Folding Shirts at American Apparel to Global Stardom
Fallon shifted the spotlight back to The Weeknd’s own legacy. With 27 songs surpassing 1 billion Spotify streams—more than any artist in history—and Blinding Lights as the most streamed song of all time, his numbers are nearly untouchable.
But Tesfaye reflected humbly. “I just wanted to quit my job,” he said, recalling his days folding shirts at American Apparel at age 19. Nobody knew his face back then, only his voice. “My boss back then? He does my typography now. He’s my creative director.”
He recounted how coworkers unknowingly played his songs at work, validating his belief that he could make music full time. “That was the moment. That was all I needed.”
How Losing His Voice Inspired a Cinematic Trilogy
Then came the real centerpiece of the night—Hurry Up Tomorrow, his new album and film, which completes a trilogy that began with After Hours and Dawn FM.
Running 84 minutes long, the album is massive. “That’s like five albums for most people,” Fallon quipped. The Weeknd nodded. “But it felt right. I’m a fan of epics. This is the final chapter.”
In fact, the film Hurry Up Tomorrow was created before the album was finished. “I had to write lyrics and melodies the day before I shot some scenes,” he said. “The last scene—I was singing, and I finished the song the night before.”
A Real-Life Breakdown Became Fictional Catharsis
The film draws loosely from a traumatic moment in Tesfaye’s real life. During a performance at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, he lost his voice in front of 80,000 people. But it wasn’t a physical injury—it was psychological.
“I had to figure it out,” he said. “Usually, music is my therapy. But this time, I wanted my fans to see what I was going through.”
He described the film as “Jungian, Lynchian—a psychological journey that grabs you and doesn’t let go.” In the story, the main character suffers a vocal injury, goes down a dark path, and meets a mysterious stranger who forces him to confront himself.
“It’s my love letter to the fans,” he said. “I tried to take that pain and turn it into art.”
A Standing Ovation, and a Clip from the Film
To cap off the interview, Fallon surprised The Weeknd with a standing ovation and debuted an exclusive clip from Hurry Up Tomorrow. In it, The Weeknd plays a character on the verge of breakdown, facing raw emotional chaos. The scene is intense, gritty, and shows off a completely different side of the artist.
“This is not Tom Cruise’s movie,” Fallon joked. “This is yours.”
With thunderous applause, Fallon reminded everyone: “Hurry Up Tomorrow, the album, is out now. And the film hits theaters this Friday.”
The Weeknd’s Evolution
What made this interview stand out wasn’t just the laughter or surprise party antics—it was how grounded The Weeknd remained through it all. Despite global success, he talked like a guy who still remembers folding shirts and nervously singing in the hallways of his high school.
He didn’t just share an album or promote a movie—he gave a glimpse into the mind of an artist constantly evolving, never satisfied, always looking to transform his scars into something meaningful.
Whether singing on stage, performing a cappella in a scene he just wrote the night before, or crashing a graduation with Jimmy Fallon, The Weeknd remains a singular force. And with Hurry Up Tomorrow, he’s created not just a project—but a moment.
