Originally written by Cory Rooney – known for working with Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey – the song was once called She Was Lovin’ Me. Still, the song never made it onto any albums, so perhaps this original title got lost to time for the longest while, until later discovered.

Chicago has the underpinnings of film noir — secrets, deceptions, moral dilemmas, all play intense parts in the song’s instrumentals. Their lyrics, with lines like ‘She lied to you, lied to me/ ‘Cause she was loving me,’ paint a forbidden passion, explored otherwise in Michael’s famous song Beat It.

It is not as widely recognized as Jackson’s biggest hits, but Chicago is a great showcase of his ability to stress narrative depth into his songs. He displays this from vocal delivery to instruments, proving that his ability reigned far beyond the strict limitations of pop-anthems.
