Drew Carey stepped into the extremely tall task of filling the shoes of one of television’s most popular game show hosts.

Carey, who hosted the CBS game show pilot Power of 10, was contacted by CBS to replace Bob Barker, who was set to retire, as the host of The Price Is Right. Carey debuted on the show for an episode taped on August 15, 2007.

Over the years, Carey has emerged as a popular host of one of history’s biggest television game shows. However, he admitted that one aspect of being on TV in general has plagued him a bit.

During an interview with Parade, Carey explained that he has a “real hard time” watching himself on television, even dating back to before his time on The Price Is Right.

“Not a lot of my fans know [that] I don’t like watching myself on TV. I have a real hard time,” he says. “I’ve sat in the editing room a few times on The Drew Carey Show, and I had to leave. I don’t do it that often because every time I saw it, I was like, ‘That’s what I look like? And that’s [how] I walk?’ I get so tired of seeing myself.”

He explained that a producer on The Price Is Right wanted to give him notes regarding his on-screen performance, and Carey had to watch the show back.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ He was like, ‘I know, I apologize.’ And he really had to twist my arm to make me watch myself, even on The Price Is Right,” he continues. “So I’ve always been like this. I don’t watch The Price Is Right. I don’t watch The Drew Carey Show. Once in a while, I’ll put it on [to] just like see a minute of it, or Whose Line [Is It Anyway?].”

It’s a surprising admission from Carey, who’s remained the show’s host since joining in 2007. Beyond that, The Drew Carey Show began in September 1995 and ran for nine years with an impressive 233 episodes.
