Nick Kyrgios has just achieved a very important result at this point in his career. He came from behind to defeat Mackenzie McDonald (USA, ATP rank 101) with an impressive score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Miami Masters (Miami Open) men’s singles.

Remember, this is only the first win for the “Onetime Australian Bad Boy” since October 2022. That means it has been 29 months since Kyrgios’ last win.

The victory on October 6, 2022 took place in the first round of the Japan Open, where Kyrgios defeated Kamil Majchrzak (Poland) with an impressive comeback score of 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2.

Since then, Kyrgios has gone 29 months “unbeatable”, with many times having to sit out to treat injuries and experiencing 9 consecutive losses…

Even Kyrgios’ quest for his first win of the season has been a struggle. At Indian Wells recently, he had to withdraw from the first round due to wrist pain.

The latest victory demonstrates Kyrgios’ resilience and determination, something he has lacked throughout the most important moments of his past career.

In the match against McDonald, the world No. 892 showed his skill and tenacity. Despite losing the opening set, he rallied with impressive aces.

From an extremely vulnerable position – after 2 years away from the ATP Tour to heal injuries and have wrist surgery, Kyrgios found his way back to a valuable and very emotional victory

“It’s been such a long journey, even when I get to the starting line of matches I still have that fear that I won’t be able to finish them,” Kyrgios admitted.

“To win today was so important and to feel again that I really belong on the pitch, it was something very special.”

Of course, Kyrgios is still very cautious, unable to be too optimistic after this victory: “This gives me more energy. But, I still have to be realistic.”

“I still have to see how my wrist will be tomorrow, because it’s going to be a very difficult test,” Kyrgios said as he looks ahead to his match against Karen Khachanov (Russia, ATP rank 22).

“We kind of grew up together as young players. He’s a crazy workhorse. Always professional, always the opposite of what I do,” Kyrgios said.

In the women’s singles, Raducanu barely broke a sweat when she defeated the Japanese wild-card player – Sayaka Ishii with an overwhelming score of 6-2, 6-1 after only 66 minutes.

Raducanu was eliminated in the first round of Indian Wells, but this is the Miami Open. The former US Open champion won 77% of his first-serve points, hit six aces and converted six break-point opportunities to make the difference.

The “Miss England” will next face the host country’s world No. 10 player, Emma Navarro. Navarro was recently crowned at the Merida Open but was eliminated in the third round of Indian Wells.
