Mike Tyson has made his opinions of Roy Jones Jr fighting Jake Paul incredibly clear, as the 55-year-old eyes up a lucrative showdown with the ‘Problem Child’ despite a huge age gap
Mike Tyson says that Roy Jones Jr is “fast enough” to cause Jake Paul problems should they meet in the squared-circle.
‘Iron’ Mike will still be licking his wounds from his own mega-money showdown with YouTuber-turned-pugilist Paul in November, which saw the 58-year-old former heavyweight boxing champion of the world handed a unanimous decision loss to the ‘Problem Child’, 27.
Tyson looked sluggish from the outset as he struggled with the pace of Paul over the course of eight rounds in front of a jam-packed AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, while viewers tuned in worldwide via Netflix. Paul bolstered his professional record to 11-1 with the victory, adding Tyson’s name to a long list of combat sports stars and former UFC champions who he bested since turning pro in 2020.
And while the content creator is seemingly toying with the idea of fighting Conor McGregor, atoning for his loss to Tommy Fury, or challenging 62-2-2 boxing great Canelo Alvarez for a world title, a number of other stars have expressed their desire to go toe-to-toe with Paul as of recent.
Rumors recently started to circulate that Paul is set to take on multiple weight world champion Roy Jones Jr in Puerto Rico in March, however, the 55-year-old was quick to extinguish any speculation on his Instagram account. Taking to social media and addressing a bout with Paul, he wrote: “LISTEN… I love what Jake has done for our sport.
“I also love the time and effort that he’s put forth to develop his craft. Being that I was Mikes last opponent before the big exhibition that they put on, I do feel like I’d probably be the most noteworthy opponent at this point. HOWEVER… I have not been contacted about any of these allegations so it is NOT A REALITY at this point in time.”
Meanwhile, Jones Jr didn’t fail to rule out stepping in the squared-circle with his far younger fellow boxer given the opportunity, adding: “For the record – just like in my prime, I’m always JUST A CALL ‘OUT’ away.”
It comes after Jones Jr told TMZ that he would be willing to “test Paul’s chin” in the wake of his victory over Tyson in late 2024. He explained: “It makes me want to just go in there and test Jake Paul’s chin. You know he’s got a good punch, I know he’s capable of putting anybody out, but I don’t think Mike checked his chin at all. So I wouldn’t mind just having a shot to see could I get to his chin, test his chin.
“If he could take the shot, cool – or if he can catch me before I get to his chin, cool. But I would definitely like a shot to get in there and shoot at his chin, you know? I think Mike got the opportunity, Mike’s legs just didn’t look good top me from round one – I kept saying that and people didn’t understand what I was saying, but the first thing we see go on fighters are their legs.
“And when Mike fought me he still had good legs, but this fight I just didn’t like his legs from round one and it was what it was.”
Tyson himself has previously made his stance clear on Jones Jr’s chances against Paul too. Speaking to Steve Covino and Rich Davis on FOX Sports Radio following his defeat to Paul, Tyson was pressed on how he thought his fellow boxer would fare against his most recent opponent. He replied: “He’s fast enough though. If Roy is training, Roy could still do a lot of stuff. He’s got to be training though – he has to be training. Jake punches hard, my body hurts so bad.”
While Tyson and Jones Jr never met in their professional boxing careers, they did come together in a 2020 exhibition bout at the Staples Centre entitled Lockdown Knockdown. The bout lasted eight rounds and was declared a draw after going the distance, and as both men were past their prime by the time they finally met in the combat sports arena, many fans found the fight to lack any real competition.
