SZA is excited to head out on tour with Kendrick Lamar soon and soak up game from him – and she’s already gotten great advice that has changed how she performs.
During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Friday (March 21), the New Jersey songstress shared a great tip she got from K. Dot.
“One time he gave me the pointer of pretending to watch myself from above,” she explained. “He sees himself while he’s performing. And that actually changed a lot for me. It’s weird ’cause when I was watching myself from afar, I was like, ‘This is not what I wanna see! I wanna see something different. I wanna turn up!”
She continued: “And then I just started invoking a completely different energy and spirit within myself. That third person – he’s also a Gemini. So you never know. He’s already split in half.”
SZA and Kendrick Lamar are set to hit the road soon on their Grand National Tour, which was announced earlier this year.
The arena tour kicks off on April 19 in Minneapolis, MN and wraps up on June 18 in Landover, MD, with stops in cities such as Houston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Chicago along the way.
The roadshow will also swing through Kendrick’s native Los Angeles and SZA’s birthplace of St. Louis, as well as the hometown of Kendrick’s fierce rival Drake, Toronto.
In January, SZA also made it clear that she’s open to doing a full album with Kendrick after Sherri Shepherd said their collabs were the results of pairing “a genius with a genius.”
“Would you and Kendrick together consider doing a joint album?” Shepherd asked on her talk show.
“I would love that,” SZA replied, to audience applause.
“I think that would be amazing,” she elaborated. “He’s such a genius, and part of his genius is him being so elusive and so mysterious. I don’t know what’s going on as much as you don’t know what’s going on. When ‘Luther’ came out, I said, okay, that’s the vocals we’re using. And same with ‘Gloria.’
“I love that… He’s a huge part of my ‘fumbling and finding’ era, because I’m just trusting all of his expertise and being thrust into these moments. He’s so good at saying yes and staying grounded, so I’m just like, ‘Teach me, Sensei, what you know.’”
