Jeremy Renner has opened up about his near-fatal accident in 2023 in a new book, revealing that he died during the the moment where he was crushed by a snowplow.

What did Jeremy Renner say about his snowplow accident?

In his new memoir, My Next Breath (due out April 29, 2025), Renner delves into the moment where he was run over by a snowplow at his home in Nevada in January 2023. Renner was saving his nephew Alex from being crushed when he was run over, and says that as he was laying in his driveway, he believes he died.

“As I lay on the ice, my heart rate slowed, and right there, on that New Year’s Day, unknown to my daughter, my sisters, my friends, my father, my mother, I just got tired,” Renner wrote (via Us Magazine). “After about 30 minutes on the ice, of breathing manually for so long, an effort akin to doing 10 or 20 push-ups per minute for half an hour . . . that’s when I died. I died, right there on the driveway to my house.”

Renner goes on to note that he was laying on the ice for about 45 minutes with his nephews and neighbors attending to his injuries before medical services arrived. The book mentions that, after some time, his heart rate dropped to 18, and the people on the scene say he turned “a gray-green color.”

“Though I’d broken more than 30 bones and lost six quarts of blood (I’d find out the true extent of the injuries only later), an even greater danger to me as the minutes dragged by on the ice was hypothermia,” Renner wrote. The Avengers star noted that, when he died, he felt a “fantastic energy,” and eventually could feel a force that told him to not “let go.”

“When I died, what I felt was energy, a constantly connected, beautiful and fantastic energy,” wrote Renner. “There was no time, place, or space, and nothing to see, except a kind of electric, two-way vision made from strands of that inconceivable energy. I could see my lifetime. I could see everything all at once. In death there was no time, no time at all, yet it was also all time and forever.”

Thankfully for Renner, the actor was able to recover from his accident. The star was flown by helicopter to a medical center in Nevada and underwent surgery for his injuries. Three months after the accident, Renner was able to walk with a cane, and he has since continued to rehabilitate himself. In 2024, Renner returned to his starring role in the Paramount+ crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown, and this year he’ll star in the next entry in the Knives Out franchise, Wake Up Dead Man.
