However, another actress named Jennifer Lopez was beginning to blow up around that time. After her starring role in Selena, Lopez was Hollywood’s latest breakout star. She was landing roles alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.

Lopez’s star power meant that Bullock was now her competition. As her film career progressed, she would go on to star in two films that almost went to Bullock.

Jennifer Gave Her Brutal Opinions Of Fellow Actresses In A 1998 Interview

In 1998, Lopez gave an interview with Movieline as her film career was starting to take off. The interview may not have seemed like a big deal at the time, but it would soon become infamous. Lopez gave some brutal opinions on fellow stars and it is said to be the source of many feuds over the years.

Salma Hayek once said that she could’ve been in Selena, the role that would forever be known as Lopez’s breakthrough performance. This is something Lopez wasn’t pleased with and let her feelings known in the interview.

“We’re in two different realms,” Lopez said. “She’s a sexy bombshell and those are the kinds of roles she does. I do all kinds of different things. It makes me laugh when she says she got offered Selena, which was an outright lie. If that’s what she does to get herself publicity, then that’s her thing. Columbia offered me the choice of Fools Rush In or Anaconda, but I chose the fun B-movie because the Fools script wasn’t strong enough.”

Lopez also didn’t seem too pleased with Cameron Diaz when asked her opinion of the actress.

“A lucky model who’s been given a lot of opportunities I just wish she would have done more with,” Lopez said when asked to characterize Diaz. “She’s beautiful and has a great presence, though, and in My Best Friend’s Wedding, I thought, When directed, she can be good.”

Lopez’s thoughts on Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t fare much better.

“Tell me what she’s been in? I swear to God, I don’t remember anything she was in,” Lopez said. “Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work.”

Sandra Bullock Almost Got Jennifer’s Role In ‘Out Of Sight’

In 2013, Bullock starred with George Clooney in the film Gravity. She told Yahoo Movies that had things panned out differently, the two would’ve shared the screen long before that.

“I don’t think we ever said, ‘Oh, we have to work [together],” Bullock said.

Bullock then revealed she met with Clooney and director Steven Soderbergh for the lead role in Out of Sight. The role would’ve seen Bullock starring opposite Clooney.

“I went years ago — I had a meeting with them for Out of Sight,” she recalled.

According to the article, Bullock read for the part with Clooney. Soderbergh said they had “great chemistry,” but decided it was wrong for the film.

At the time, Bullock thought this meant the end of her friendship with Clooney.

“They didn’t want me for the film and I was all, ‘Oh, our friendship is so over,’” Bullock said. “It obviously wasn’t over.”

The role would end up going to Jennifer Lopez, who shared her own account of how things panned out with Bullock.

“Universal was pushing for Sandra Bullock because they said she’d put people in seats,” Lopez said. “George and the director met with her, but they were like, ‘If Sandra really wants it, she’s gonna have to test for it.’ She wouldn’t test, and her agent, who is also my agent, supported that.”

“If I was Sandy, I’d say, ‘Well, I’m gonna show them that I can do it. I’ll read with them, make them offer me the part, then make them pay out the ass.”

Out of Sight ended up doing very well with critics and even scored two nominations at the Academy Awards.

Sandra Was Going To Star In ‘Enough’ Before Jennifer Landed The Part

In 2002, Lopez starred in the drama Enough. In the film, Lopez plays a victim of domestic violence who escapes her abusive husband.

The role was initially set to go to Bullock. However, Variety reported that she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with another film she was working on.

The film was directed by Michael Apted, who told E! that he was initially hesitant to work with Lopez due to rumors of diva-like behavior.

“You hear all the legends about his difficult she is and its going to be hard to get through it and all this kind of stuff, and then we met and we got on,” he said. “But then there was a kind of gap between us agreeing to do it and starting to rehearse and during that time I could never get a hold of her. She was always so busy. And I thought, oh my god, this is a big, tough job and if she isn’t going to be around, how are we going to get through it?”

However, Apted quickly saw that Lopez was “very focused on what’s in front of her. If you’re in her peripheral, forget it ,you won’t get the time of day,” he said. “Up until when we started rehearsing, I was very much in the peripheral of her life. But once we started, she was incredibly focused. What I love about her is that she’s gifted, but she’s also very hardworking.”
