Ryan Seacrest Through the Years: From Radio Personality to Media Mogul and More
Media royalty. Ryan Seacrest has dominated the entertainment industry for more than two decades — both in front of and behind the camera.
Born in Atlanta in 1974, the Emmy-winning producer began his first radio internship while still in high school. After graduating, he studied journalism at the University of Georgia, but he dropped out before finishing his degree and moved to Los Angeles to start his career in earnest.
The risk paid off, because by 1993 he was already on TV hosting the ESPN series Radical Outdoor Challenge. One year later, he began cohosting the kids’ game show Gladiators 2000, and from then he was rarely without a TV gig.
While Seacrest’s voice was a radio mainstay for much of the late 1990s, his real breakout moment came in 2002 when he became the host of a new reality competition series called American Idol. The show was an instant hit, launching the careers of artists including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks.

“The first season stands out to me because we went on the air unknown,” the On Air With Ryan Seacrest host wrote in The Hollywood Reporter in February 2022, reflecting on Idol’s 20th anniversary. “About midway through the season, it started to generate relatively large numbers in primetime. We were taken aback by the machine that it was becoming and the success; it was all so unknown — even to us.”
The New Year’s Eve star added that he wasn’t even sure what to do when it was time to announce the inaugural winner. “I didn’t know how to deliver the news because it was the first time, but then it rained fireworks, and this huge celebration began, and she sang ‘A Moment Like This,’” Seacrest recalled. “I get emotional pretty easily, but I got really emotional in that moment.”
The Punk’d alum continued hosting Idol after its 2018 move from Fox to ABC while also cohosting Live With Kelly and Ryan with Kelly Ripa. He also took over Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve after the late Dick Clark suffered a stroke that affected his speech.
In February 2023, Seacrest shocked fans when he announced that he would be leaving Live With Kelly and Ryan after nearly six years. “Working alongside Kelly over the past six years has been a dream job and one of the highlights of my career,” the Kardashians producer said in a statement at the time. “She has been an amazing partner, friend and confidant, and although we will always be a part of each other’s lives, I will miss our mornings together.”
Seacrest continued: “I also want to thank Michael Gelman and the entire staff and crew — we’ve made memories to last a lifetime, met some of the most incredible people and had the warmest welcome into the homes of so many viewers across America. It’s been a memorable ride and now I’m excited to pass the baton to Kelly’s ‘real’ husband, Mark [Consuelos].”
His final episode of Live aired in April. Two months later, Sony Pictures Television named Seacrest as Pat Sajak’s replacement on Wheel of Fortune following the original host’s retirement in 2024.
Keep scrolling for a look back at Seacrest’s life and career:
1993
The Georgia native began his TV career as host of ESPN’s Radical Outdoor Challenge. The following year, he began cohosting the children’s game show Gladiators 2000, which was a spinoff of American Gladiators.
1995
Seacrest landed a slot as a DJ on the Los Angeles radio station KYSR, holding the post until 2003
2000
The Reality Check alum made a cameo appearance on Beverly Hills, 90210 as the host of a fake game show. “I was very excited to get that role because when I was a kid in high school, I just wanted to meet Jason Priestley — Brandon Walsh — he was the guy I looked up to,” Seacrest recalled of the appearance during a 2017 episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “Part of the reason I moved to L.A. was because I watched Beverly Hills, 90210 and thought the world was just like that. It’s not.
2002
Seacrest began cohosting American Idol with Brian Dunkleman, becoming the show’s sole emcee starting with the second season in 2003. The DJ later said he considered the series to be his “big break” in the industry. “When it started, we realized it was something significantly special and unique,” he told GQ in October 2015. “What it did for me individually, was motivate me to do more. I saw it as an opportunity to expand my businesses because I now had access to get the meeting that I didn’t have before the success of that show.”
2004
The Ultimate Revenge alum took over the weekly radio countdown show American Top 40 from legendary DJ Casey Kasem. That same year, the Knocked Up star launched his namesake syndicated radio show, On Air With Ryan Seacrest.
2005
Seacrest made his first appearance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve for the countdown to 2006 after Clark suffered a stroke that affected his speech. For the 2009 edition, the show was officially renamed Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.
2006
The former NBC Saturday Night Movie host signed a deal with E! to host and produce various programs on the network before expanding his role to include NBCUniversal networks as a whole. He has since produced shows including Shahs of Sunset, Married to Jonas and The Wanted Life.
2007
Seacrest created Keeping Up With the Kardashians after Kris Jenner expressed interest in filming a reality show with her family. The series ran for 20 seasons and spawned numerous spinoffs including Life of Kylie, Khloé & Lamar and Kourtney and Kim Take New York, many of which Seacrest also produced.
“We got linked up through a casting director. I had met the girls before, but I didn’t know the family well,” Seacrest recalled to Haute Living in 2015, detailing the show’s origins. “So, I said to a guy in my office, ‘Why don’t you buy a video camera and go out to their house on a Sunday when they’re having a family barbecue, shoot it, and then we’ll watch it and see what we think.’ I remember perfectly: he called me from their house Sunday afternoon and said, ‘It’s absolutely golden; you’re going to die when you see this tape. They’re so funny, they’re so fun, there is so much love in this family and they’re so chaotic — they throw each other in the pool!’ We watched it and rushed the tape to E! immediately, and that was the beginning.”
2010
Seacrest began a romance with Julianne Hough, whom he dated for three years. He also won his first Emmy, taking home a trophy for executive producing the ABC series Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. He has been nominated for his work on American Idol 12 times but has never won.
2017
The Insatiable producer became the permanent cohost of Live With Kelly and Ryan after a lengthy search for a partner for Ripa. Later that year, Seacrest’s former E! stylist accused him of sexual harassment. The TV personality denied the accusations, saying in a statement: “I dispute these reckless allegations and I plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result. I treat all my colleagues with kindness, dignity, and understanding, as this is a principle that’s core to who I am.”
2018
E! closed the investigation of Seacrest, saying there was “insufficient evidence to support the claims against” the host. One month later, Seacrest returned as the host of the relaunched American Idol on ABC.
2021
Seacrest began dating Aubrey Paige Petcosky. “Ryan is increasingly confident he and Aubrey have what it takes for the long term,” an insider told Us Weekly of the couple in June 2022, shortly after the couple made their red carpet debut.
2022
The entertainment mogul returned as an executive producer on The Kardashians after the Kardashian-Jenner family moved to Hulu following the end of KUWTK.
2023
Seacrest announced his exit from Live With Kelly and Ryan after nearly six years. Ripa’s husband, Conseulos, will replace him as the cohost. “OK NOW we’re empty nesters. When your friends become work mates become family,” Ripa wrote via Instagram. “Congratulations @ryanseacrest on surviving six winters in NYC! I’m proud of you and am forever in your corner. And @instasuelos welcome home, or to the contractual obligation phase of our relationship
2024
Seacrest was announced in June 2023 as the new host of Wheel of Fortune following Pat Sajak’s retirement. Sajak — who started hosting the series in 1981 — confirmed earlier that month that he would be leaving the game show after season 41. Seacrest, for his part, will take over the long-running ABC series in 2024 for season 42.
