During her debut briefing, the New Hampshire native promised to not only engage regularly with the news media but also broaden access by opening the briefing room to podcasters and social media influencers.

Leavitt’s first official appearance as the face of President Donald Trump’s second administration lasted nearly 47 minutes, where she fielded questions on critical issues, including a White House freeze on federal grants and loans and the administration’s early moves on deporting undocumented migrants.

As Trump often speaks for himself, Leavitt’s role is to interpret his messages and ensure they align with his political and policy objectives. Leavitt’s approach to the role of press secretary marks a shift in how the White House engages with the public. By integrating newer media platforms and reaching out to diverse audiences, she intends to make the briefing room more accessible than ever.

Promising Political Career

Born and raised in New Hampshire, Leavitt’s political journey began at Saint Anselm College, where she earned a degree in politics and communication in 2019. She became the first in her family to graduate from college, attending on an athletic scholarship and playing for the school’s softball team. Initially interested in journalism, Leavitt worked at local TV station WMUR before shifting her focus to politics, which she described as her true passion. She became drawn to public service and political strategy, inspired by President Trump’s first term.

In 2017, Leavitt secured an internship at the White House during Trump’s first term. She worked in the correspondence office, writing letters on behalf of the President. Eventually, Leavitt moved into the White House press office after seeking a role with Kayleigh McEnany, Trump’s final press secretary. According to a report in the Associated Press, McEnany praised her for her intelligence, positivity and professional demeanor, adding that she knew instantly Leavitt would be a great fit for the job.

Rising Through the Ranks

After Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, Leavitt transitioned to become the communications director for Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), one of the most vocal defenders of Trump in Congress. Leavitt’s commitment to the Trump agenda remained unwavering, even as she ran for a congressional seat in New Hampshire. She won the Republican primary but lost to Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas in the general election. Despite the setback, her political skills and communication abilities didn’t go unnoticed.

Leavitt’s next major role was as the national spokesperson for Trump’s 2024 campaign, where she traveled extensively, defending his policies and appearing frequently on TV to promote his message. It was clear that she had earned Trump’s trust, and when the need arose for a new White House press secretary, he chose her for the job.

Leavitt’s personal life reflects her resilience and determination. Just days before Trump’s assassination attempt in Pennsylvania last July, Leavitt gave birth to her first child, a boy named Nicholas. Leavitt is married to Nicholas Robert, a real estate tycoon who manages a multimillion-dollar business. He is 32 years her senior, at 60 years old, and proposed to her during Christmas 2023.

Despite the personal milestone, she returned to work almost immediately, exemplifying her commitment to both her family and her role in public service. Trump, who had four different press secretaries during his first term, has expressed full confidence in Leavitt’s ability to succeed in this challenging role. He lauded her as “smart, tough, and an effective communicator,” praising her for her readiness to take on the responsibility of delivering the administration’s message to the American people.
