Karmelo Anthony’s mother has denied claims that her family is using the funds raised for his legal defense to upgrade their lives.
Anthony’s family got a significant break in the murder case, with a judge slashing his $1 million bond to $250,000. The family also received close to, if not more than, $500,000 in donations.
It’s said that they’ve used that money to get a new car while also spending lavishly. The Daily Mail also reports that the family has been living in a $900K residence in a gated community that costs them $3,500 in monthly rent.
The outlet also revealed having gone to the Texas location themselves and having seen Amazon packages arriving throughout the day. They were also told that the family is not poor, despite their claims of financial hardship in court.
Karmelo is out on bail and under house arrest following charges for the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf earlier this month. The teenagers, both 17, had gotten into a fight during a track meet between their schools when Anthony pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Metcalf, who died on the scene.

The teenager’s mother, Kala Hayes, spoke to the press this week, claiming her family is being endangered by all the lies being told about them.
“Whatever you think about what happened between Karmelo and the Metcalf boys, my three younger children, my husband and I didn’t do anything to deserve to be threatened, harassed, and lied about,” she said. “The lies and false accusations that have been said about us, especially over the past week, have been overwhelming. The lies and their amplification put my family in danger.”
There was also quite a scene at the press conference, which took place on Thursday, as Austin’s father had to be removed by police following an outburst.
“To the family who experienced the loss, my heart truly goes out to you,” Kala said, crying. “To those who have supported my family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Karmelo Anthony’s family insists he’s being judged unfairly and was not at fault for the altercation, although no one denies he stabbed Austin Metcalf, but he will have an opportunity to prove his self-defense argument to a jury.
“We believe in the Constitution, we believe in the laws of this state, but those laws must apply to all of us, not just some of us,” his mother added. “There’s an active investigation that everyone involved wants to be full and fair. We believe in the legal process and that is where the truth will come out.”
