Maggie Dunn’s Mother Finally Speaks—Unveils Secrets After John Foster’s Heartfelt Idol Tribute
John Foster Pays Tribute to Lost Friends with Emotional Original Song on American Idol
John Foster, a Louisiana native and LSU student aspiring to be an oncologist, gained national attention by reaching the Top 14 of American Idol 2025. His Top 20 performance, however, left a lasting impact.
Performing an original ballad titled “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” Foster wrote the song shortly after losing two close friends in a tragic New Year’s Eve crash in 2022.
“This is for the two sweet angels taken from us,” Foster said, referring to Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill. “Maggie was one of my best friends, and Caroline was a good friend I wish I knew better.”
The heartfelt lyrics resonated deeply with the audience and judges:
“Each tear that falls on my guitar
Is a hug from afar
Lord, won’t you tell that angel I love her?
As y’all live in the stars.”
Maggie Dunn’s Mother Reacts: “My Heart Just Melted”
After Foster’s touching performance, he pointed to the audience where Maggie Dunn’s mother, Erin Martin, watched with tear-filled eyes, visibly moved.
In an interview with WBRZ, Martin shared:
“My heart just melted.”
Martin recalled Maggie and John’s friendship from middle school and shared a photo of Maggie at Foster’s first live gig, made poignant by John wearing the same hat during his Idol tribute.
“For John Foster to create and perform the song is a tangible example of Maggie’s enduring light and love.”
While nothing can bring her daughter back, Martin hopes Foster’s performance might inspire change.
“For a moment, millions thought about my child. Maybe someone can effect change in police pursuit policy.”
The Tragedy of Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill
The heartbreaking story behind Foster’s song began on New Year’s Eve 2022, when Maggie Dunn (17) and Caroline Gill (16) died in a high-speed police chase gone wrong.
Addis Police Officer David Cauthron ran a red light at 86 mph, crashing into the girls’ vehicle. The collision claimed their lives and severely injured Maggie’s brother, Liam Dunn, who survived after extensive hospitalization.
According to WBRZ News, Officer Cauthron never braked. In 2023, he was sentenced to 32 years, with 22 years suspended. He will serve 10 years and must speak at schools and law enforcement events to raise awareness about reckless pursuits.
“WBRZ reported Cauthron was driving 86 mph and never braked before the crash.”
A Performance That May Inspire Change
John Foster’s tribute was more than a performance—it was a powerful act of remembrance, compassion, and awareness for viewers nationwide.
Our hearts go out to the families of Maggie Dunn, Caroline Gill, and all affected by this tragedy.
