Country Icons Light Up the CMA Awards with an Electrifying Performance

The 2019 Country Music Association Awards kicked off with an electrifying start as three country music legends took the stage together. Country icon Dolly Parton, Sunday Night Football vocalist Carrie Underwood, and The Voice coach Reba McEntire opened the night with a powerful performance of “Those Memories of You.”

Following their stunning trio, they were joined by other trailblazing women in country music, including Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, and Tanya Tucker, for a dynamic medley celebrating female artists in the genre.

Before their performance, the trio entertained the audience with a lively monologue, where they playfully referenced the Performer of the Year nominees, including Keith Urban, who was seen enjoying the moment alongside his wife, actress Nicole Kidman. They also joked about filling the hosting role previously held by Brad Paisley, who co-hosted the CMAs with Underwood from 2008 to 2018.

Their song choice, “Those Memories of You,” holds a special place in country music history. Originally written by Alan O’Bryant and first recorded by Bill Monroe, the song gained widespread recognition when it was featured on the 1987 album Trio by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. That legendary collaboration set a precedent for women in country music, making this CMA performance a fitting tribute to its legacy.
