Reba McEntire Calls Writing the ‘Happy’s Place’ Theme with Carole King a “Dream Come True”
Reba McEntire proved that she could cross over into the sitcom world in 2001 with Reba. Now, she’s back with Happy’s Place. The new sitcom premiered on NBC earlier this month. Like her first foray into the TV world, Happy’s Place features the country legend singing the theme song.
McEntire co-wrote the theme song with legendary singer/songwriter/actress Carole King. Recently, the “Fancy” singer appeared on the SiriusXM show Ben + 1 hosted by Ben Harlum to talk about the show. During their conversation, McEntire revealed what it was like to write the Happy’s Place theme with King,
Reba McEntire on Writing the Happy’s Place Theme with Carole King
“She’s my hero. We’re friends, super, super talented, but warm-hearted. I just love her with all my heart,” Reba McEntire said about Carole King. “To get to write a song with her, that’s a dream come true for any singer/songwriter. And she was very gracious and said, ‘Yeah, I’ll help you.’ Because I’d gotten the music the way I wanted and I’d written a little bit,” she recalled.
“So I sent all that to her and she came back with a totally well, very well-written song. And I said, ‘Carole, I’m a little attached to what my melody is. Can I marry the two?’ She said, ‘Absolutely. Go for it.’ And she loved the outcome,” McEntire added.
McEntire on What It Takes to Make a Good Theme Song
While discussing the theme song, Ben Harlum wanted to know, “What’s the trick to a good theme song?”
“Oh, it’s gotta have a hook. And that and ‘Happy’s Place’ It’s just that,” Reba McEntire said. “Our producers, one of our producers, Mindy, has a grandson and she’s watching the roughs all the time and he will just come running in there saying, ‘Reba on!’ And so he knows the Reba show because she produced that too,” she said. “But boy, when the Happy’s Place theme song comes on, he comes running. He wants to watch.”
