Remember When: Reba McEntire Made Her Acting Debut in ‘Tremors’ in 1990
Reba McEntire is famously known for her acting stint on her sitcom Reba, second only to her prolific country music career. She’s since gone on to take a big red chair on The Voice and is currently starring in another sitcom, Happy’s Place. But, do you remember when she made her acting debut in a little 1990 film called Tremors?
The film centers around Val McKee and Earl Bassett, played by Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward. They wish to leave their small town of Perfection, Nevada, tired of their dull lives. However, perfection is disturbed by the introduction of prehistoric worm-like creatures that crave human flesh. Val and Earl meet seismologist Rhonda, played by Finn Carter, who aids them in the fight against the creatures along with survivalist couple Burt and Heather Gummer, played by Michael Gross and Reba McEntire.
In portraying Heather Gummer, McEntire balanced Michael Gross’ more eccentric character Burt. Heather was the calmer, more rational half of the couple, while Burt was making homemade pipe bombs to kill the creatures. In a behind-the-scenes look at the film from 1990, McEntire spoke about her role and what it was like acting for the first time in a feature film.

Reba McEntire Speaks About Her Film Debut in 1990
“This is my first time in the actual movie business,” McEntire began in the clip, sitting on set of the film, “and it’s been quite an experience, I’ve really enjoyed it.”
She continued, “The first day I was here we did the master shot of a scene in town when we first find the monster. I was down there [on the ground] and I was looking at the monster and I had two lines and they were ‘whew, stinks too.’
“And at the end of my scene [director Ron Underwood] went ‘That’s a take,’ and I went ‘whoo! Yeah!’” she added, demonstrating her excitement. “And I was just screaming my head off going ‘that was my first take! I’m in the movies now!’ Everyone was kind of looking at me like, ‘she’s lost her mind.’” McEntire laughed, and continued, “But they were kind of tickled for me because they knew I was excited.”
She explained her character and Michael Gross’ character a bit then, explaining that “Burt is really a serious, uptight kind of guy, he wants to take charge here and get to business, and Heather is really the one that’s in charge. Don’t tell Burt that, but Heather is really the one who’s in charge and she’s got a level head and everything.”
