The heavyweight star has issued a plea to U.S. President Donald Trump amid the ongoing war between his beloved Ukraine and Russia
Oleksandr Usyk has sent a message to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine
Oleksandr Usyk has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to “open his eyes” regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The ex-undisputed heavyweight champion challenged Trump amidst continuing peace negotiations involving Washington, Kyiv and Moscow. Recently, Usyk, 38, appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored to talk about his upcoming showdown with Daniel Dubois in July at Wembley Stadium.
Despite the discussions, a deal seems elusive – with Trump apparently losing patience with the proceedings. Usyk has publicly criticised the actions of the Russian government and has expressed his disappointment over peace suggestions that entail giving up Ukrainian land.
“Hey, President Trump – open eyes, please,” he told Morgan concerning the situation in Ukraine. When questioned about the prospect of Ukraine surrendering territory to Russia, Usyk retorted: “It’s bull****. It’s bull****. “[What] Russia is do[ing], the whole world knows is bull****. Why you take my country?”
When asked what he would like Trump to do next, Usyk didn’t hesitate with his response, saying: “Please stop [the] war in Ukraine.” Morgan responded: “But don’t give Russia the territory?” Quick to reply, the heavyweight superstar said: “No of course not, this is my territory, the territory of my country, it’s my people, of course.”
Trump declared in the Oval Office last week that he found dealing with Russia less challenging than Ukraine. “I think Russia is ready,” he said, suggesting belief in a near-deal with the Kremlin, but not with Ukraine, stating: “I thought it might be easier to deal with Zelensky. So far, it’s been harder.”
On Sunday, news broke that the U.S. may step away from peace negotiations with Ukraine and Russia if the countries fail to advance towards resolving their three-year conflict. In an NBC’s “Meet the Press” interview, Trump disclosed the “tremendous hatred” simmering between Ukraine and Russia. Nevertheless, the president remains optimistic about striking a peace agreement, although he acknowledged that America’s role as mediator won’t continue indefinitely.
“I do believe we’re closer with one party. And maybe not as close with the other, but we’ll have to see,” Trump commented. He also highlighted the ongoing losses, saying: “Five thousand soldiers a week on average, are dying. They’re not American soldiers. But I want to solve the problem.” The host asked. “How long do you give both countries before you’re going to walk away?”
Quick to answer, the U.S. president said: “Well, there will be a time when I will say, okay, keep going, keep being stupid. Maybe it’s not possible to do. There’s tremendous hatred. Just so you understand, Kristen, we’re talking tremendous hatred between these two men and between, you know, some of the soldiers, frankly, between the generals, they’ve been fighting hard for three years. I think we have a very good chance of doing it.”
