UFC Atlanta: Paul Craig vs. Rodolfo Bellato no contest, illegal kick

In an absolutely bizarre situation to close out the preliminary card at UFC on ESPN 69, Rodolfo Bellato and Paul Craig left without a decision thanks to an accidental foul.

As the first round winded down, Craig (17-9-1 MMA, 9-9-1 UFC) landed a stiff upkick from his back that caught Rodolfo Bellato (12-2-1 MMA, 1-0-1 UFC) flush on the chin. It appeared his knee was down, making him grounded and the kick illegal.

What happened next was quick and a bit confusing at first – likely for almost everyone at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

It looked like Bellato went out. Then he looked up toward referee Kevin MacDonald, and then he quickly darted to the cage on his backside. When MacDonald looked to be checking on his status after the upkick, Bellato grabbed for his legs briefly.

The referee and cageside physicians spent some time checking Bellato, apparently to see if he was OK to continue. The kick happened with one second left in the opening round. But after consulting replay, MacDonald decided Bellato was out, the kick was accidental, and the fight was a no contest.

Bellato and Craig were supposed to fight a month ago, but a Bellato medical issue pushed the bout to Atlanta – only to have it end the way it did.
