Jennifer Lopez has always put her “best foot forward” for her twin children, Emme and Max. Born on February 22, 2008 to the “On The Floor” singer and her then-husband Marc Anthony, the kids grew up in Lopez’s hometown of New York City. “It’s unconditional love,” Lopez once told People. “I know everybody feels this way about their kids, but I just feel like they’re super special. I can’t wait to see what they do.”

Following the couple’s divorce in 2011, and Lopez’s rekindled romance with Ben Affleck in 2021, Emme and Max grew up in a blended family structure. They gained three step-siblings via Affleck: Samuel, Seraphina, and Violet. Lopez, for her part, has embraced the ups and downs of navigating single parenthood.

“I’ve been a single mom at times in my life, and [I’ve asked], ‘Am I enough for them?’ ” Lopez once said in a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly. “And the truth is, all you need is really one good parent to love you.”

Emme and Max were born in 2008, following the release of Lopez’s album Brave. One year after their arrival, the twins joined their parents on stage at Madison Square Garden. n a 2023 interview with People, Lopez said that growing up with famous parents was “a lot for them,” but that they “handled it with a lot of grace.”

Now that the twins are older, they’re ready to claim a little of the spotlight for themselves. For the opening night of Othello on Broadway, for example, Lopez was joined by Emme in a rare public appearance that saw them wearing cute coordinated looks.

They’re homeschooled.

Despite her busy schedule, Lopez opted to homeschool her children so that they’d be able to join her on tour. “Everybody’s like, ‘You should have them in school, they need friends,’ ” she said in a 2018 interview, People reports. “It can drive you crazy.”

Still, Lopez said it was important for her to be hands-on and spend as much time as she could with her kids, knowing how fast they would grow up. She added, “they are super happy, well-adjusted, loving, caring kids, and that’s the most important thing.”

Their teenage years have been tough.

With the baby years behind her, Lopez admitted that raising two teenagers isn’t always easy. “It’s challenging,” she said during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. “You have this baby for a while and then it’s like, your best little friend who loves being with you all the time, and then all of a sudden it’s like, ‘Get out of my room.’” She explained how teenagers tend to challenge what their parents say and do, but the key to surviving those years is “riding the waves.”

Challenges aside, Lopez considers motherhood a gift. On Mother’s Day in 2024, she penned a tribute to her twins on Instagram, in which she called Max and Emme the “most beautiful blessing” in her life.

Max inspired Lopez to engage with Black Lives Matter.

Following the death of George Floyd in 2020, Lopez was inspired to act by her son, Max. “He wanted me to make sure I realized that I had power and that I should use it, and I thought that was very insightful,” she told Elle in 2021. “It was one of those parenting moments when you’re like, ‘Oh, maybe I’m raising a conscientious, kind, loving kid here.’”

Lopez and her then-fiancé Alex Rodriguez joined some protests in L.A., where she brought along a homemade poster inspired by one of her songs, “Let’s Get Loud.” Both Lopez and Rodriguez later documented the day on Instagram.

In 2020, Emme joined Lopez on one of the world’s biggest stages: the Super Bowl halftime show. The duo then belted out Lopez’s hit single “Let’s Get Loud.” “My lil’ coconut gave me all the energy I needed to go out there!” Lopez later wrote on her Instagram Stories.

Emme has also penned a children’s book, Lord Help Me, which covered the topic of prayer. “I really hope children are able to learn to pray, share the book and spread the power of prayer after reading it,” Emme told People after the book was released in 2020.

Emme and Max have a special relationship.

In an exclusive interview with People, Emme confirmed that the twin connection is truly second to none. “Max and I have a special relationship,” Emme explained. “Since we were very little, I could always understand him when no one else could.”

Twenty years after their first fell in love, Lopez and Affleck (finally) tied the knot in July 2022. The wedding was a family affair. All five children (Lopez has two and Affleck has three) walked down the aisle before Lopez processed. The couple later filed for divorce on their second wedding anniversary.

“We weren’t only marrying one another; we were marrying these children into a new family,” she wrote in a special issue of her newsletter, On The JLo. “They were the only people we asked to stand up for us in our wedding party. To our great honor and joy, each one did.”
