On Wednesday, the singer announced that she and boyfriend Benny Blanco were engaged after one year of dating with a joyous Instagram carousel showcasing her exquisite diamond ring—and while the massive sparkler was objectively gorgeous, the cut of stone Blanco chose might actually have a sweet hidden meaning.

The ring features an 8-carat marquise-shaped diamond, which might be a subtle nod to Gomez’s 2015 hit song “Good For You,” featuring A$AP Rocky. In the track, the musician describes herself as a “marquise diamond” that could “even make Tiffany jealous.” The lyrics read: “I’m on my marquise diamonds / I’m a marquise diamond / Could even make that Tiffany jealous.”

In addition to the giant marquise diamond in the middle, the ring is also set on a yellow gold pavé band. It’s estimated to be worth approximately $1 million and is a timeless choice that dates back to the 18th century when King Louis XV of France commissioned a diamond that resembled the smile of his official chief mistress: the Marchioness (and later Marquise) de Pompadour—according to jeweler Laura Taylor.

Gomez and Blanco’s engagement comes months after fans speculated that the former Disney Channel star was hiding an engagement after she posted a photo to Instagram with her left ring finger covered with a heart emoji back in August.

A few months earlier, Blanco made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show and told Stern that he saw marriage in his future with Gomez. “When I look at her … I’m always just like, I don’t know a world where it could be better than this,” he said at the time while also hinting that having kids with the singer was his “next goal” after marriage.
