Tyson Fury has called it quits on his boxing career. The heavyweight champ announced he’s hanging up his gloves after losing twice to Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury broke the news in a short statement:
“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing, it’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this, Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”
The announcement comes as a surprise. There had been talk about Fury possibly fighting Usyk again or facing Anthony Joshua next year.
Fury’s recent bouts with Usyk didn’t go his way. Last May, he lost a split decision, giving Usyk all the heavyweight belts. In December, Usyk won their rematch by unanimous decision.
This isn’t the first time Fury has said he’s retiring. In 2022, after beating Dillian Whyte, he announced he was done. But he changed his mind and kept fighting.
After that false start, Fury went on to beat Derek Chisora in December 2022. He also won a split decision against Francis Ngannou in October 2023.
Fury’s career has been full of big moments. In 2015, he shocked the boxing world by beating Wladimir Klitschko and winning several heavyweight titles. He stepped away from the sport for a while after that, giving up his belts.
When Fury came back in 2018, he started with a win over Sefer Seferi. But his most memorable fights were probably his three bouts with Deontay Wilder. Their first match in 2018 ended in a draw. Fury won the next two, with a technical knockout in 2020 and an 11th-round knockout in 2021.
