Flunked Police Training for Being Too Friendly, This Dog Becomes a Hero After Earthquake

In an unexpected turn of events, Roger, a Labrador Retriever dog once dismissed from police training for being “too friendly,” has become a celebrated hero in earthquake rescue missions. This inspiring story highlights how every dog’s unique traits can find their perfect purpose.

A Shocking Discovery

Roger began his career in Taiwan’s Customs Administration, trained as a drug-sniffing dog. However, his playful and overly friendly nature led to his disqualification from the program. Labeled unsuitable for law enforcement, Roger’s future seemed uncertain until his handler, Lee Hsin Hung, recognized his potential in search and rescue missions.

He was transferred to the Kaohsiung Fire Department’s rescue unit, where his agility, bravery, and social nature were better suited. These traits, once considered a drawback, became essential in high-pressure rescue scenarios.

Roger’s first mission came in 2018 after a 6-magnitude earthquake, where he helped locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings. His friendly demeanor made him a calming presence for victims, and his bravery during operations quickly earned him recognition.

In April 2024, Taiwan experienced a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in 25 years. Deployed to the disaster zone, Roger successfully located the body of a missing 21-year-old woman, bringing closure to her grieving family. As Roger nears retirement at age nine, plans are underway to find him a loving forever home. His journey from a “failed” police dog to a celebrated rescue hero has touched countless lives, proving that every individual has unique value and a role to play.
