Watch Whoopi Goldberg lead The View cohosts singing, dancing about harmful tariffs to the tune of ‘The Hokey Pokey’

“You put the tariffs in, you put the tariffs out!” Goldberg sang while she and Alyssa Farah Griffin danced at the Hot Topics table.

The View‘s battle cry against potentially harmful economic tariffs proposed by the Donald Trump administration is, apparently, “The Hokey Pokey.”

Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Farah Griffin invoked the mystic power of the 200-year-old participatory children’s dance on Tuesday’s episode of the talk show, as the panel broke down Trump’s ongoing trade clash with Canada and Mexico over planned tariffs on imports.

Griffin, the conservative cohost who previously worked among Trump’s White House communications team during his first presidential term, engaged in the impassioned Hot Topics discussion by pointing out that “when Trump was reelected, people voted for him on the economy and lowering the cost of living,” though “all of the market gains that he got after Election Day have now plummeted since he’s actually been in office and governing.”

In a prelude to Goldberg’s musical opus, Griffin observed that “this time, he’s introduced tariffs in a much more sweeping way, and the market is reacting accordingly,” she said.

Griffin attempted to elaborate on her point, though the power of song was too forceful for Goldberg to contain.

“When you tell businesses you cannot plan because today there’s tariffs, [the next day] there’s not,” Griffin said, with Goldberg cutting in to note, “It’s like ‘The Hokey Pokey!’”

Goldberg then flexed her powerhouse pipes as she sang — to the tune of “The Hokey Pokey” — “You put the tariffs in! You put the tariffs out! You put the tariffs in, and you shake them all about!”

Griffin smiled as she played along, moving her arms in and out as she grinned through the sonic journey that pierced The View‘s airspace — which, for once, did not include interruptive noises from Joy Behar’s cell phone, unknown entities floating over Goldberg’s head, or Sara Haines swearing on air.

On a serious note, Goldberg later criticized “the Hokey Pokey-ism of all of this entire administration” that she felt would “start bothering” Republicans who previously voiced support for Trump, given that his policies stand to impact the economy in significant ways.

Elsewhere, Goldberg and Griffin’s razzle-dazzle of a duet is hardly the first musical production The View has put on amid serious developments. Cohost Ana Navarro mounted a one-woman residency in April 2023, when she led the audience in a group sing-along of Steam’s “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” in celebration of Tucker Carlson’s exit from Fox News.
